Is it safe to vaccinate my cat while taking antibiotics for a UTI?

This will depend on why your kitten is on antibiotics. Usually a pet on antibiotics is ill and since only healthy animals should be vaccinated to ensure that the entire immune system is trained, it is advisable to wait with vaccinations until your kitten is healthy again and off the antibiotics.

Yes this should be fine as long as she is feeling better. Also, you may consider putting her on a daily immune boosting vitamin like viralys or vetriscience lysine treats. It doesn’t treat the virus but it may help to boost her immune system. I hope this helps!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Antibiotics will not make the vaccine not effective. The reason to not vaccinate when they are sick is that the immune system is already ramped up when you are sick, so as to not make it worse. This is more of a concern when there is systemic inflammation (whole body response) to the infection vs. an isolated infection in the bladder. A thickened wall of the bladder could very well be from chronic urinary tract infections, however the question would be WHY is she having chronic urinary tract infections. Also, before switching antibiotics (which is OK to try) it is a good idea to get a culture done of the urine to determine which antibiotic is best to use. If this course of antibiotics doesn't work, or if Gracie gets another urinary tract infection within the next year or so, then I would suggest making sure you get a culture of the urine before starting antibiotics (ideal but often not done due to cost of this test), and also I would be looking at her vulva area to determine if there is a physical cause to her getting chronic urinary tract infections. This can happen when animals are obese, or if there is a lot of extra skin or flaps around the vulva and infection is present around the vulvar skin. Sometimes doing surgery of the skin around the vulva can help prevent more urinary tract infections. Best of luck with Gracie!

If Brittany has an infection or depressed immune system, she may not be able to mount a proper response to the vaccine so it may not be worth doing. Or worse, it could be more than her immune system can handle at this point and it could make her feel even worse. Save yourself the trouble and wait until Brittany is feeling 100%. A lot of the viruses that cause resp infections will stay in the system and recur intermittently. I would wait until the kitten is cleared up again as the immune system is currently preoccupied and wont be able to process the vaccine optimally.

Hello. There is no reason that a cat that previously blocked should not receive vaccinations. At the very least, the rabies vaccine should be kept up to date. For feline distemper/leukemia, as long as Ray has received the kitten series, & 1 booster one year later, then I am OK with boosting this vaccine every 2-3 years. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Jimmy. I do recommend that he is current on all his vaccines before bringing a new kitten into the home. Personally, I have not seen vaccines cause kidney problems in cats. So I do not believe this is a reason not to vaccinate him. However, his veterinarian will know his complete medical history and can give you more detailed advice. I hope this information helps!
