Why is my cat peeing clear, odorless liquid that looks like water?

Older cats have a tendency to have problems with their kidneys as they get older. This can result in their kidneys not concentrating their urine as well, so it is more dilute and has less (or no) odor to it. Kidney disease can cause a number of problems, so I would recommend having your veterinarian evaluate Lilly and check a urine sample and blood work. Having more dilute urine can also predispose older cats to urinary tract infections, that will will be important to check for as well. If you have one available in your area, you might consider having a house call vet come to the house if Lilly does not do well going to the vet. These signs might be compatible with a urinary tract infection/inflammation. Stress related (idiopathic type of inflammation) infection and presence of crystals are the most common causes of it. These signs must be checked as soon as possible as urinary tract infection can be dangerous in male (especially neutered) cats as it can develop into a urinary tract obstruction/blockage. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed. Urine can be almost odorless if it is diluted a great deal, especially at this age. This can also potentially be leakage from his reproductive tract. However if it is indeed urine, leaking of urine is never normal. I would recommend taking him to your vet if this continues to happen. He may have a congenital defect or a weakened urinary sphincter (valve that opens and closes to allow urine to exit the bladder) that is causing this. Hopefully though this is something that he will grow out of, but until then you will have to keep an eye on things and get him examined if needed. Best wishes!

Hello and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sometimes it may be normal for a kittens urine to have a stronger odor especially if the urine is very concentrated. You may want to try feeding an all canned diet with water mixed in to help reduce the urine concentration. However, sometimes a UTI can cause a change in urine odor. As long as Beasty is using the litter box normally and not having urinary accidents or going urinating small amounts frequently, I would be less concerned about a UTI. However, if changes in her urination habits occur (like straining to urinate, frequent urination, crying while urinating) or if she stops eating or drinking or becomes lethargic it would be a good idea to schedule a vet visit. Also, if the urine odor persists you may want to bring a sample to your veterinarian to have it evaluated. I hope this is helpful!

There is nothing necessarily that should make your cat's urine smell like garlic, but it may be possible that Butter's urine is just much more concentrated than your other cats. I would ensure that she is drinking enough water and not dehydrated, as dehydration leads to concentrated, very smelly urine. If she seems to be drinking a comparable amount to your other cats, I would not be worried. If she is acting abnormal in any other ways, I recommend having her seen by your veterinarian for an exam and a urinalysis. Your vet can test the urine for any abnormal chemicals such as sugar or ketones, or test for infection, that may cause it to smell different from your other cats. I hope this is helpful!

I would recommend you encourage him to drink more water which you may do by feeding him canned food or increasing the number of water bowls around the house. The longer he holds his urine the darker in color and stronger odor it can have. Also if he dehydrated it has potential to make the urine a little darker. Since he has issues with a litter box, I would have his urine checked for a UTI or crystals to see if that is complicating the situation and causing some of these problems. You can also add canned food to make sure he is getting plenty of fluids
