My cat's urinary problem worsened, meowing & shivering. Is he okay?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Penguin! His symptoms are strange and possibly indicate pain. My biggest concern would be if he is having trouble urinating. Check his litter box and see if there is urine present. If there is no urine (and that is unusual) or if there are small drips of urine then I would take him to the Vet. If he gets up follow him to see what he does. Check the house for vomit and be sure he is eating. Any excessive grooming of his penis may also indicate a urinary problem. Poor Monty. If Monty seems lethargic, vomits, or gets into the position to urinate and does not produce any urine, then I would take him to the veterinarian immediately. However, since we know he prefers not to use a litterbox and had the stress of the move, that might be your explanation. If you have any idea where he used to like to urinate/defecate (grass, dirt, mulch, plants, etc), I would try to replicate that in the new yard since that is his preferred area to go. The other problem is that most cats want to have privacy, so he may not go in front of you (while on a leash). Since we are coming into a holiday weekend, I would recommend having your vet evaluate him tomorrow (presuming that they are open) if he does not urinate overnight tonight just to make sure that everything is OK. Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. I am sorry to hear that Mowser is not feeling well. If he was seen recently, I would recommend contacting your vet for options, especially if you are having financial constraints. The vet may only require you to bring Mowser in to have his urine tested and to get an antibiotic, which would not be too much. Diagnostics such as x-rays and ultrasound would most certainly add up quickly but to test urine and receive an antibiotic should not be too much. Because of his age I would also recommend that his blood be tested but this of course would add more to the cost. There is not much I can recommend over the counter apart from keeping him hydrated and fed. If this is a urinary issue, you can start him on a cranberry supplement to see if that helps. There are multiple cat cranberry supplements you can find online quite easily. However, if he is obstructed or partially obstructed, he may be going into kidney failure and there is nothing you can do at home to relieve the obstruction. If he is obstructed and does not get proper care, there is a high risk of him developing fatal systemic compromise. I hope he feels better soon! I would recommend having Oscar examined by a veterinarian right away. Male cats can develop urethral blockages that only allow them to urinate small amounts (or not at all). This can become life-threatening if not treated right away. Hello. In your post, you indicated that your cannot cannot pee. This is a life threatening emergency and he should be taken to the closest hospital or emergency clinic. If he has an obstruction, this needs to be taken care of immediately. In addition to it being very painful, it causes kidney failure and he can die if this is not corrected immediately. His urine should be looked at microscopically to determine if he has an infection or crystals or possibly a small stone. He will require a catheterization while sedated to relieve the blockage. He will probably need fluids and may require hospitalization. While the antibiotics you have listed are all potentially good for a uti, we are legally not permitted to prescribe or recommend a dose without an examination. Poor Kitty Kins. It sounds like he has either lower urinary tract disease, stones or has a partial urinary blockage. None of these conditions improve on their own, but instead require some level of treatment or management. So the treatment they gave him so far is basically they drained his bladder and treated him for an underlying urinary tract infection. However if he is developing a blockage he will need to be catheterized and treated with medications to help keep his urinary sphincter relaxed. You are doing the right thing by feeding him canned food, as this will increase his water intake and help promote a healthy bladder. However if he does become completely blocked (blocked Tom), he will need emergency procedures to free up the blockage and empty his bladder, as they mentioned already. I totally understand not being able to do the procedure the first time around due to cost. Unfortunately this cost is pretty standard for these types of things. I think that if he urinates 2 more times or more, that means that he is urinating more frequently which would warrant an evaluation by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Urinary signs like this can be observed with something like a urinary tract infection, urinary tract stones, among other possibilities. If he is still able to pass urine and does not seem in discomfort, you could probably wait until Monday. If he is unable to urinate or appears to be in discomfort, he should be evaluated by an emergency veterinarian before Monday. Good luck and have a great day! I hope he is just fine.
