My cat has tooth resorption. Are dental x-rays necessary?

Dental x-rays are a really good tool at doing the best possible job we can during this procedure. They are what allow us to look beneath the gumline to diagnose diseased tooth roots and help to make sure that we are extracting all the teeth that need to go. A good job can also be done without them, we are just a little more limited in our ability to determine which is a healthy tooth. There are still LOTS of vet practices that don't have dental x-ray capability, and they can all serve their patients well.

It may be a resorptive lesion on the tooth. This is an indicator of dental disease. They can be painful, so a visit to your veterinarian would be recommended. Tinsel may need a complete dental cleaning. It is possible that if these teeth were left in that they would affect the surrounding teeth, which is why it would be important to have them removed. If the teeth are left in, they will likely continue resorbing but they can become quite painful if not addressed. I would recommend having these teeth addressed sooner rather than later. Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Some cats can develop dental disease faster than others. Bacteria in the mouth leads to tartar formation and all cats habe different numbers of bacteria and different predispositions for tartar formation. Many times we see dental lesions know as oral resorptive lesions. These are similar to cavities, except with these resorptive lesions, the way that they form is poorly understood still. Some cats develop them faster than others. Unfortunately, once they develop, the affected teeth typically need to be removed. At 6 months Knyazz should have all of his adult teeth. If he has severe stomatitis I would recommend checking for hemobartonella. This is a disease that can affect there teeth and mouth at a young age. I typically do not see resorptive lesions this young or in baby teeth. Hope that helps

The scaling and polishing portion of the dental is the least time consuming, and most inexpensive portion of the $1000 estimate. In addition, tartar left on teeth can further aggravate gum disease. The necessary extractions cannot be done without anesthesia or pre-anesthetic bloodwork to make sure that Baxter’s liver/kidney function appears normal enough to handle anesthesia. With severe gum recession/fractured teeth, cats can develop serious tooth root abscesses and oral pain resulting in weight loss, poor health. If there are in fact diseased teeth in Baxter’s mouth, having a complete dental scaling/polishing with necessary extractions will likely significantly improve his quality of life and decrease the chances of oral bacteria causing heart valve issues in the future.
