Is my cat's painful tooth resorption, and does it need removal?

It is possible that if these teeth were left in that they would affect the surrounding teeth, which is why it would be important to have them removed. If the teeth are left in, they will likely continue resorbing but they can become quite painful if not addressed. I would recommend having these teeth addressed sooner rather than later. Hello. Most veterinarians can identify the resorptive lesions during an oral exam, but x-rays can be very useful for identifying early lesions, or any possibility of a retained tooth root remnant(s). Not all veterinarians are set up to do dental radiographs, and, this will add substantially to the procedure cost. Are x-rays the better way to go? Absolutely. As for preventing FORLs. Unfortunately, we just do not know. We still do not understand the pathophysiology of tooth resorption. Extraction is the treatment of choice. Hello. At some point in time, Picole could still develop an abscess that could travel down into her jaw. The recommendation of all veterinary dental specialists is to either have the tooth removed or perform a root canal, even on an older fractured tooth. It may be a resorptive lesion on the tooth. This is an indicator of dental disease. They can be painful, so a visit to your veterinarian would be recommended. Tinsel may need a complete dental cleaning. Prices vary in different geographical locations and also by individual clinic so it’s impossible to know how much it may cost for her. Unfortunately brushing will not resolve the problem as there is quite severe tartar accumulation and gingivitis. Descale procedure would be ideally needed. So sorry that your cat is having this problem. You could take him to a veterinary dental specialist and see if the specialist will remove his tooth. Or find another vet in your area and take him for a second opinion. If his blood work is normal and he is in otherwise good health, then the risk of extracting a bad tooth is low.
