Why can a cat's dental disease progress to Stage 3 TR so quickly?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 8 lbs

My cat was diagnosed with Stage 3 TR on 9/15. Can you tell me how long it takes, approximately, to reach that stage? He was at the vet on 7/1 and received an A+ on his teeth at that time. Thank you!

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Some cats can develop dental disease faster than others. Bacteria in the mouth leads to tartar formation and all cats habe different numbers of bacteria and different predispositions for tartar formation. Many times we see dental lesions know as oral resorptive lesions. These are similar to cavities, except with these resorptive lesions, the way that they form is poorly understood still. Some cats develop them faster than others. Unfortunately, once they develop, the affected teeth typically need to be removed. If his teeth are becoming diseased, it is best to address it now before it spreads to the other healthy teeth. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. My kitten has FORLs. Can this dental disease be treated to save adult teeth?

At 6 months Knyazz should have all of his adult teeth. If he has severe stomatitis I would recommend checking for hemobartonella. This is a disease that can affect there teeth and mouth at a young age. I typically do not see resorptive lesions this young or in baby teeth. Hope that helps

Hi and thanks for your request. These signs could be due to severe gum inflammation and even infections, with abscesses building up on the dental roots (so sometimes not completely visible. These signs are quite concerning and another check up would be needed as antibiotics may be best given. Multiple dental extractions and cleaning are recommended in these cases. My cat has tooth resorption. Are dental x-rays necessary?

Hello. Most veterinarians can identify the resorptive lesions during an oral exam, but x-rays can be very useful for identifying early lesions, or any possibility of a retained tooth root remnant(s). Not all veterinarians are set up to do dental radiographs, and, this will add substantially to the procedure cost. Are x-rays the better way to go? Absolutely. As for preventing FORLs. Unfortunately, we just do not know. We still do not understand the pathophysiology of tooth resorption. Extraction is the treatment of choice. My cat has reabsorbed teeth but no pain. Should I still remove them?

It is possible that if these teeth were left in that they would affect the surrounding teeth, which is why it would be important to have them removed. If the teeth are left in, they will likely continue resorbing but they can become quite painful if not addressed. I would recommend having these teeth addressed sooner rather than later. My cat has a bump on his mouth. Is it a dental problem or something else?

I suspect this might be what is called a "resorptive lesion." There is a tiny tooth right there, and for some cats, they develop lesions where the body actually breaks down their teeth over time. They can be painful. For some cats, they don't show any signs. Have him evaluated by your vet; they may recommend a sedated dental exam and dental xrays to evaluate the tooth roots. If roots are left under the surface, its potentially a source of infection and pain, and surgical removal of the root may be considered. Other possible causes of the bump would be inflammation, infection, (unlikely based on appearance), or an abnormal grownth/tumor. Get him in to your vet when you can to have it checked out. My cat can't chew, gulps, and I can't clean his teeth. Dental disease?

Hello. Some cats can have pretty severe dental disease & this can result in a very painful mouth. Any veterinarian can examine Moto for the degree of tartar & plaque on the teeth, & the presence of gum disease called periodontitis. Some cats can also develop very severe lesions on the gums & tissues at the back of the throat. This we call stomatitis. Moto might benefit from a professional cleaning, the use of antibiotics, the judicial use of steroids & even the removal of some teeth.
