Outdoor cat has tiny brown ear bugs and is irritated. What to do?

Without seeing them in person I cannot tell you whether these are chiggers. These could also be tick nymphs. If they have legs, I would take some Frontline spray and dab it on the parasites. If there are some inside the ear canal they would have to be removed by your vet with a special instrument. Best take your kitty to the vet for an exam and removal of those parasites.

Carbon has milliary dermatitis. It is often caused by a reaction to insect bites like knats, or from allergies. Basically it is a skin infection/irritation. Usually it will clear up on its own if the cause is gone. You can clean the skin with a mild antibacterial pad and apply antibacterial ointment. If Carbon goes outside using a flea prevention product will help repell insects too. Allergies are often seasonal so as it cools off and the bugs and humidity go away this should resolve. Those ears are very red, which indicates that something is really irritating them. Ear mites could be a cause and can be easily treated for. Allergies is another common cause, but it's more likely to be related to the environment than it is food. Food allergies account from 5-15% of all allergies and require a proper elimination diet trial to diagnose the cause, so I wouldn't worry about switching around foods at this time. Bathing is a good idea, because it may remove the environmental allergin that is causing the problem. I would recommend bathing about once a week with cool water; using a shampoo and conditioner labeled for cats with oatmeal or aloe as ingredients. You can also get ear flush at the pet store. This will help treat/prevent ear infections and remove allergins. There are some good instructional videos on youtube that can show you how to properly do this. I recommend flushing once every other day for two weeks. However, this kitty needs some relief from the inflammation and it may be necessary for a trial treatment for ear mites. If the vet you went to before did not offer any sort of treatment options, then I would either ask for a follow-up visit or go to another vet for a second opinion. That was likely a little chicken flea. They tend to latch on to the ears and do not move until they are fully satisfied. As for the black debris in your kitty's ear , this may be an ear infection caused by ear mites or bacteria. I suggest you take Rex to your vet for an ear exam. If you do flea preventive care with your cat the chicken fleas should get killed as all other fleas will too.

It looks like Chubby has been scratching his ears or that he has an infection of the outside of the ear. Since he was just treated for mites I’d recommend rechecking with your vet so they can see if he still has mites or an infection in his ear canal. With a clean ear canal, the most common cause of tiny bumps on the ear itself is related to hypersensitivity reactions from insect bites. The inflamed and sore lesion in front of Teak's left ear is most likely due to self-trauma from him scratching. The concern is that this skin may be infected from the excessive scratching. Your best bet is to take Teak to his vet for an exam because he may need a course of antibiotics and antihistamines to manage this issue.
