My cat is throwing up white foam. What could be the cause?

Vomiting in cats is very complex and it is not always easy to figure out why they do it. Three most common diseases that older cats get are thyroid disease, kidney disease and diabetes. Depending on her exam findings, diagnostic tests such as blood work and x-rays may be discussed. A treatment plan, including fluids to rehydrate her, will be formulated. She could have eaten a foreign object that is causing an obstruction in gastrointestinal tract. Intestinal infections or generalized inflammation can cause vomiting as well. Poor Minnie! It sounds like she is ill and I think it would be best to recheck with your vet. She could have an infection, parasite, endocrine disease, kidney disease, obstruction, etc. Your vet may need to run some lab work( CBC, chemistry profile, urinalysis, fecal test, T4, Felv/Fiv test) to help determine the cause of her problem. Once diagnosed, your vet can prescribe medications to help. She may need an antibiotic, anti-vomiting, gastrointestinal protectant, and other medications to help. If don't think stress would cause her to have projectile vomiting so please call your vet and have her examined again. Hope she gets better soon!

It sounds as California is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.

Your Vet, if you call them, should have an answering machine providing emergency clinic numbers. I wouldn't be too sure they are closed Monday. My hospital is open. Causes of vomiting are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, foreign body, dietary indiscretion, toxin ingestion, kidney or liver problems, food allergy/intolerance, coughing from asthma. She may have just had a temporary upset stomach or a hairball. No worries. She will groom herself and get the vomit off. This can occur secondary to irritation of the stomach lining from the frequent vomiting or be the result of an ulcer. Either scenario is potentially serious and she will need to see a veterinarian as soon as possible. Continue to offer plain water and the tuna water to try to prevent her from becoming dehydrated.
