My cat threw up on new food. Should I try it again or stick with old?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. To be honest, you can probably just offer Esmeralda a small amount of her normal food. Start with about 1/4 of her normal meal size. If she keeps that down well, you can give her a little more in a few hours (or just give her her normal sized breakfast in the morning). If when you transition her to canned food she starts vomiting again, I highly recommend that you have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Causes of vomiting in kittens are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, ate something causing a blockage, food allergy/intolerance, hairballs or reaction to a new treat/food or table scraps. If Mau is still eating and active I would try to get him on 100% kitten food. Some cats vomit more on canned and vice versa. So have both available. Chicken isn't a balanced diet for a cat. You can also try some laxatone in case he has hairballs. If he stops eating or continues to vomit I would have him rechecked. You can try keeping him on a sensitive stomach food such as Iams limited ingredient, Fromm, or Purina sensitive stomach. However, it sounds like Keeko may have a inflammatory bowel disease and really the prescription diets have more reliable results. Also I would keep in mind that sudden switches from one food to the next can cause upset stomach issues in and of themselves. It is recommend to do a slow transition over the course of 7-10 days whenever you are making a food change. This is just 1 test to run so this should be something you could feasible do to at least get him started on something more reliable and effective. If the vomiting does not improve within a few weeks of being on the food, or if he develops any more symptoms, then he should be worked up further (i.e. abdominal x-rays). Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If you still have any of the previous cat's food, you can try gradually introducing the new food. For example, start by feeding 25% new food and 75% old food for a few days. Then 50%/50% for a few days. Then feed 75% new food and 25% old food for a few days. Then feed just 100% of the new food. This will help to reduce the risk of gastrointestinal upset as a result of a diet change. If you do not have any more of the previous diet, that is OK. Just be aware that your cat may have some soft stools for several days during the initial diet change. I hope this is helpful!
