My cat is thin, lethargic after brother died. Mourning or sick?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 6 years and 10 months old | 17 lbs

Chickens brother died 1 week ago and I can’t tell if he’s mourning or if he has cardiomyopathy too. He’s gotten skinnier, sleeping more and has kind of needy. He’s made weird sounds when breathing his whole life but now I’m scared it’s because of HCM. I took him to the vet last and they said blood pressure, sugar, lungs and heart rate were fine, I have a sonogram scheduled to check his heart next Friday but I’m really scared something might happen before then. thank you for your response

Hello. I am so sorry for the loss of Chicken's brother. If these are recent pictures of Chicken, then he still looks quite robust & healthy. He may very well be missing his brother & this could be causing him some stress. Loss of appetite & sleeping more are certainly signs of depression in people, so why not cats. As long as he is still eating & using the litter box normally, he looks like he will be fine until next Friday. I know you are worried, but he looks OK for now. Give him lots of hugs ( no kisses ). Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
