My cat's tail wound is dark red and healing slowly. Vet visit needed?

Tails can be very difficult to keep wrapped or bandaged. Consider an e-collar (cone) to prevent licking and to allow healing. That wound in the image should be addressed by your veterinarian. Ideally, the hair around it should be clipped to prevent contamination. The wound itself should be gently cleaned. Sutures may be indicated if it is a fresh wound or deep wound. Antibiotics and pain management may also be indicated.

It looks like there is good granulation tissue in the wound. Leave it alone, make sure Luna does not lick the wound (e-Collar) and it should heal fine. It may or may not form a scab. If it oozes a lot of yellow or green pus (which it is not at this time), you should take her to the vet for a a recheck.

Poor girl. It really likely just needs some antibiotics to fully heal here. If a cut gets infected, then it will delay the healing process. I would suggest cleaning it with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water for now and then get this seen by your vet b/c she likely just needs antibiotics and potentially even closure of the cut to help it heal all the way. She also is likely messing with it b/c it is itchy due to infection. You can place an e-collar on her for now to keep her from getting to the wound. You can find e-collars at your local petstore. You can try applying Neosporin and giving it time. Unfortunately, tip of the tail injuries like this can be very difficult to heal since there is not much tissue or a very good blood supply to the very tip of a cat's tail. Sometimes they are licking it to clean even when you don't see, which will significantly slow healing. If it doesn't appear to be healing in a few days, then your kitty should get checked out by a vet. Sometimes we need to amputate the tip of the tail so that we can close healthy tissue over the bone to aid with healing.

This looks like is may be a bite wound abscess that ruptured. Ideally, it should be addressed by your veterinarian. Surgery may be indicated to clean and flush the wound. Antibiotics and pain medication may also be indicated. Place an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent licking until he sees the doctor. You may need to confine him indoors until he is healed.

It actually looks like Lulu’s wound is healing very nicely. The redness will continue to resolve slowly over the next few days. I would recommend continuing the ointment your vet prescribed until the area is completely cleared and appears pink, instead of red. Another scab may form and this is fine. Just continue to keep the area clean, dry and medicated. It looks as if it will be completely healed in about another week. I hope this helps.
