Why is my cat's face swollen, hiding, and sitting in litter box a lot?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 7 lbs

My cat Peanut, Age 1 year has been experiencing facial swelling. Vet checked his teeth and they look fine. No injuries or anything. He’s hissing and hiding and won’t let us near him. He’s been sitting in his litterbox a lot. We thought the swelling was an allergy to his new food but switched him back to his old food and he is still not okay.

Your vet is going to have to sedate/anesthetize him so they can get a good look inside his mouth. He may need x-rays of his skull/mouth. There is only so much the vet tell by looking at the mouth/teeth of an awake cat. That would be the next step. This is not normal.
