My cat has a swollen mouth. Is it an emergency? What's the vet cost?

It is difficult to tell from the pictures, but it looks like the swelling is involving the lower lip. Anytime there is a significant change, I always think it's worth having your veterinarian examine it just to make sure it doesn't need treatment before getting worse. Your vet will need to evaluate Tracy's mouth to check for dental problems and make sure they don't suspect eosinophilic granuloma complex (https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=656). If it is getting worse, I would certainly have it evaluated as soon as possible. Otherwise, I would schedule an appointment with your veterinarian at your earliest convenience just to be safe. I can't tell from the photo if it is swollen. If you think it is, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian because it could indicate the beginning of an infection or tooth root abscess. There's not much you can do in that area because Misty will lick off any topical treatments. She should wear an elizabethan collar at all times so she cannot rub the area. If the lesion is not swollen, you can monitor it for a few days. If the area is not healing or is getting worse, I recommend to have Misty examined by the veterinarian. A lesion like this could signify ringworm (which humans can get) or allergies. I hope this helps.

It is swollen but I would not say it's an emergency situation. As long as he is eating and drinking normally, you don't need to rush him into a vet asap but he should see one in the next few days. I am concerned that his lower lip is that swollen. Give his vet a call to see if you get him into a vet in the next few days. I hope this helps!

Your vet is going to have to sedate/anesthetize him so they can get a good look inside his mouth. He may need x-rays of his skull/mouth. There is only so much the vet tell by looking at the mouth/teeth of an awake cat. That would be the next step. This is not normal.

Poor girl. It sounds like Princess has an abscess (infected pocket) which can be caused from an underlying tooth root abscess due to periodontal disease, so I do agree with you here. The only treatment for this is to lance and drain the area, start antibiotics and then get the infected tooth removed surgically. You can place a cold compress on the area tonight for 5-10 minutes to help with some of the soreness. You can follow that with a warm compress for 5-10 minutes and repeat this in 12 hrs. She should be ok until the morning when you can get her to the vet for further treatment. Best wishes with Princess and I hope she gets better soon. Take care.

Hi and thanks for posting! Oh my, this looks serious. There may be an oral tumor, mass, or severe dental disease happening here with Muning. Unfortunately, there is really nothing that can be done for this at home and there really are no over the counter medications that can be given, unfortunately. The best bet for Muning is for him to to see a veterinarian as soon as possible for an evaluation so a diagnosis can be made so that he can get treatment. Best of luck to you both!

Poor baby. Looks like a pouty lip..lol. it is swollen, has a secondary inf3ction, and an ulcer. These can be caused by a primary infection, contact irritation, insect bite, or an immune mediated condition. Make sure his bowls aren't plastic, and call your veterinarian in the am to schedule an appointment to get it checked out.
