Why is my cat's belly swollen and she's breathing hard after worming?

From your description it sounds like your cat may have roundworms. These are typically present in vomit with high parasite loads. The good thing is that they are easy to treat. Your veterinarian may have a preferred deworming medication that they can prescribe for your cat. You may also wish to submit a stool sample from your cat for analysis. It is not likely that these parasites would cause loud breathing. That is something you may want to mention to your vet when you call. It could be a sign of upper respiratory inflammation.

A bloated belly in a kitten is usually suspicious of a high worm problem, but there are other possibilities. If she has a thin layer of muscle in her belly, then this can cause it to appear bloated. It can also happen with liver, spleen and other organ enlargement; and also if their is excessive fluid in the abdominal cavity. Poor Beebo! It could be that she is suffering from roundworms again if she's had them in the past, but a pyometra could also be a possibility. Other signs of a pyometra in cats can include vomiting, lethargy, and a discharge from the vulva. If you are really scared she has a pyometra, my advice would be to bring her into a vet right away. A pyometra is fatal without treatment, and time is of the essence for the success of treating them. In my opinion, it's always best to be safe than sorry, and I'd rather have an animal checked out with nothing wrong than not have them checked out and it be something serious. Worms can cause abdominal distention. Some pets can also have a very slow metabolism and she may be taking in too many calories. I recommend to have her stool checked for worms and a physical exam. The doctor can calculate exactly how many calories she needs to achieve a healthy weight based upon her body structure of it’s not parasites. I hope this helps.

If she has been swollen around her bladder, then this could just be an actually problem like a hernia or something benign like a fat pad. Since she is vomiting and then swelling has been there for awhile now, I would have her checked out at least once to ensure it looks okay. Your vet will be able to tell you whether it is anything to worry with or just to continue to watch. Hi Taylor! I'm very glad that you found Lily, what a relief for you! Likely, her stomach problem is related to intestinal worms. That would cause her constipation and a swollen stomach. Lily will need a deworming treatment as soon as possible. I recommend Drontal, which is available by prescription only from the vet. Drontal is my recommendation for Lily because she could also have tapeworms from being outside so long, and OTC deworming treatments do not contain the medication needed to kill tapeworms. In addition, after being missing for so long, she will need a check up from the vet to make sure she is healthy, and the vet can prescribe her the Drontal while at the visit. I would have Lily seen by a vet tomorrow for a health check and Drontal. Tonight, you can give her a teaspoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) mixed in with her food to see if that helps her poop. Please have her seen by a vet first thing in the morning.
