My indoor cat has a big belly. Could it be worms or a diet issue?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Longhair | Female | spayed | 3 years old | 20 lbs

My 3 yr old spayed indoor calico cat has an extra large belly. I do not over feed. 1/4 c. dry & 1 tsp wet in am, a few dry morsels and 1/8 c. of wet at dinner then 1/4 cup (which she does not finish) and a few treats (10 including teeth cleaning treats) about 8 pm. She drinks a lot ... loves very cold water. She has a very large belly. Could she have worms? What could be wrong?

Worms can cause abdominal distention. Some pets can also have a very slow metabolism and she may be taking in too many calories. I recommend to have her stool checked for worms and a physical exam. The doctor can calculate exactly how many calories she needs to achieve a healthy weight based upon her body structure of it’s not parasites. I hope this helps.
