My old cat has a swollen, hard belly. Is it worms or serious?

Worms can cause abdominal distention. Some pets can also have a very slow metabolism and she may be taking in too many calories. I recommend to have her stool checked for worms and a physical exam. The doctor can calculate exactly how many calories she needs to achieve a healthy weight based upon her body structure of it’s not parasites. I hope this helps.

Hello. Is this a recent development? Is he having any difficulties breathing? If so, he needs to see a veterinarian immediately. Otherwise, the most common reason for bloating in a young cat is intestinal parasites, especially roundworms. You can purchase a general kitten wormer & deworm Astro yourself, or have him evaluated by your veterinarian at your earliest convenience to make sure he is receiving the proper treatment. Poor Lucky! There are several causes for a swollen abdomen like parasites and fluid in the abdomen. I would have your vet take a look at him as soon as you can to see what the cause is. If there is fluid in the abdomen, it could be a serious condition that needs to be treated. It could also be FIP which isn't treatable but he needs to be seen to be diagnosed. Hopefully, since he is still eating, he just has some intestinal parasites which your vet can easily treat. I hope this helps and he feels better really soon.

This is highly abnormal and very unlikely to be due to the worming treatment. if money is an issue you need to contact a pet charity and they should be able to help with the costs, but she must see a vet urgently.

Yes certainly his bloated belly could be due to worms, and even though you don't see any in his poop, he could have them. Oftentimes the only signs of worms in pets is eggs in the poop, which are microscopic. It won't hurt him to deworm him even if he doesn't have them. I would get a deworming treatment to give him now, then another in two weeks to kill all the worms. He should then be dewormed every three months. If this doesn't help with his bloated belly, then he should be checked out by a vet. I would find one closest to you to see him. I hope this helps!

Poor Beebo! It could be that she is suffering from roundworms again if she's had them in the past, but a pyometra could also be a possibility. Other signs of a pyometra in cats can include vomiting, lethargy, and a discharge from the vulva. If you are really scared she has a pyometra, my advice would be to bring her into a vet right away. A pyometra is fatal without treatment, and time is of the essence for the success of treating them. In my opinion, it's always best to be safe than sorry, and I'd rather have an animal checked out with nothing wrong than not have them checked out and it be something serious. If it would set your mind at ease to have Beebo seen by a vet, I recommend taking her into an ER vet now. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

There are other things besides worms that can cause a bloated stomach including liver or heart disease (something she would have been born with most likely), infection such as FIP (though she would likely be acting quite sick by this time), ileus or other gastrointestinal problem. I would say, if she is eating and passing stool normally, and it doesn't seem to bother her, I'm not too concerned. Other things you could try: A probiotic - I like Purina FortiFlora A prescription gastrointestinal diet from the vet x-rays to make sure there is no mechanical reason for buildup of gas Bloodwork to look for signs of infection or liver disease Other as recommended by your vet.
