Why did my 6-month-old cat vomit a worm and breathe loud while sleeping?

Worms cause GI upset more than they likely affect breathing, unless the pet is also anemia (which is less likely if the gums are pink). More likely would be upper respiratory infection, heat, stress, pneumonia, or other heart or lung disease. A dewormer won't hurt anything, but it may not help, either. The best thing to do would be to have the kitten evaluated by a vet.

I’m going to guess that this is a roundworm. It can be difficult to identify adult worms but it is usually much easier to identify eggs in a stool sample. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian for a stool analysis and to get the appropriate deworming medication.

I suggest you get Milo to your vet for an exam, fecal testing and deworming. If a cat is vomiting up worms then there is probably a bad infestation. If he has roundworms he could have other types of worms too. The infestation can be so bad that he could get an intestinal obstruction which is certainly life threatening. This is highly abnormal and very unlikely to be due to the worming treatment. if money is an issue you need to contact a pet charity and they should be able to help with the costs, but she must see a vet urgently.

Most intestinal parasites are passed fecal-orally (meaning the animal would have to eat infected stool) or from ingestion a mouse or a flea. Signs of intestinal parasites are weight loss, diarrhea and possibly vomiting or decreased appetite. The only way to diagnose worms to to physically see the adults or have a stool sample checked to see the eggs microscopically. Sometimes Vet will just treat for them, especially if they are suspicious or the cats go outdoors. You can always see if your Vet would treat with out a stool sample. I have never heard of any parasite causing excessive tearing. That is most commonly a viral upper respiratory tract infection or allergies. Sometimes cats just vomit. Other causes of vomiting are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, ate something gross, ate something that is stuck, pancreatitis, intestinal disease. I hope this helps!

I'm sorry that your cat had such an awful passing. Unfortunately, without an exam it would be hard to say. If there was a large parasite load, dying parasites can block/obstruct the intestines, and some parasites such as heartworm can block arteries leading to death, but it would be hard to say if this or another issue was the cause of Bendingo's passing. If you do get another cat, making sure they are regularly dewormed and up to date on vaccines can help them stay healthy. Working with your vet and having regular exams done can also help check for any health issues that need treatment as well.

Intestinal worms can make a cat very sick, but it's not common that it would cause Bootsy to die. He does sound pretty sick at the moment, so I would take him into a vet immediately to get checked out and treated. Best of luck.
