My cat is suddenly drooling a lot. What's causing it and what to do?

My cat is drooling alot all of a sudden, i mean alot, like a 3 inch circular puddle and drool dripping from his mouth and all down his front. I dont know what this means or what to do.

If it happened suddenly it is due to something he licked or ingested, cats are very sensitive to bad taste and start drooling easily. it could be something toxic as well, if within 20 minutes you do not see any improvement or if your cat becomes lethargic- take him to the ER right away.

It sounds to me like Snickerdoodle needs to be examined by a veterinarian. Excessive salivation can be due to dental infection, toxin exposure, or even Rabies so it's very important to have Snickerdoodle seen by a veterinarian immediately. Rabies is obviously a serious human health concern so if your veterinarian suspects Rabies you should also seek advice from your physician.

If an infection or toxin is suspected Snickerdoodle will need prescription medications and possibly hospitalization for supportive care.

It’s quite possible, cats can be really sensitive to scents. If they both started drooling at the same time, then I would suspect an environmental cause. So a strong scent, or something they could have licked or eaten. Some houseplants will cause drooling. You can rinse their mouths out with water to help, but if it doesn’t improve in 24 hours, they should get checked out by a vet.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Tobi. He will need to see a veterinarian this weekend if his symptoms persit or if he is experiencing any difficulty breathing. He could be drooling from nausea or be experiencing a respiratory tract infection. Did he eat anything that he shouldn't have or something bitter? That can cause drooling. Why is my 4-month-old kitten drooling and acting sick?

I would be concerned about Zapatitos being nauseas, having infection or trauma inside the mouth or even a toxin if possible exposure. I would recommend taking her to a vet to have a good detailed exam to help narrow down why Zapatitos is hyper salivating. It is important to look under her tongue and make sure string is not attached causing a foreign body. Also you can look in her mouth to make sure you do not see any type of sores. Sometimes cats will chew electrical wires and get burns in the mouth or even have viruses that cause ulcers. All of these things can cause hyper salivation. I think a vet visit is best to help Zapatitos feel better as soon as possible.

My cat is drooling excessively. What home remedies can help?

Excessive drooling in a cat is almost always from some type of issues inside the mouth - like he tasted something (like maybe a plant) that didn't taste good or there is a problem with a tooth (broken or infected). Other options: nausea, ulceration in the mouth and kidney disease. The best I can tell you to do at home is rinse the mouth with plain tap water. You can him some human antacid medication but I don't know what you have available to you so if you would like to see what products you have and post again we can help you with how much to give him.

There are some contagious viruses such as calicivirus that can cause ulcers in the mouth along with other upper respiratory signs such as sneezing and nasal discharge. It is also possible that both cats were exposed to a toxin or something caustic that injured their mouths if they go outdoors or have access to any chemicals. If their symptoms have been present for more than 24 hours I'd recommend taking them to an emergency veterinarian. They can examine both cat's mouths to look for problems and determine whether or not they may be dehydrated from not eating or drinking.

Why is my cat drooling excessively with no clear vet diagnosis?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Rocco. Excessive drooling can be the result of nausea, mouth pain or a bad taste in the mouth. I will typically treat with anti-nausea medication to see if it helps. If not, make sure that he is not eating anything that he shouldn't (plants, etc). Finally, I will anesthetize the patient for a thorough oral exam, dental radiographs and clean the teeth. I hope this information helps!
