Why is my cat drooling excessively with no clear vet diagnosis?

Typically excess salivation is either caused by nausea or pain (oral or abdominal), although this is not an all inclusive list. There can still be oral disease present, especially if these missing teeth were not removed but fell out. Cats can get resorptive lesions of their teeth which can be really painful and the changes can be hard for owners to detect. They can also get lesions in their mouth (stomatitis, a mass, ulcers, etc.) that an owner may not see. Additionally diseases of other body systems may cause drooling (kidneys, gi, etc ). I would recommend your kitty seeing a vet for a thourough oral exam and blood work to start. A good oral exam will likely require sedation and perhaps dental xrays. Excessive drooling in a cat is almost always from some type of issues inside the mouth - like he tasted something (like maybe a plant) that didn't taste good or there is a problem with a tooth (broken or infected). Other options: nausea, ulceration in the mouth and kidney disease. The best I can tell you to do at home is rinse the mouth with plain tap water. You can him some human antacid medication but I don't know what you have available to you so if you would like to see what products you have and post again we can help you with how much to give him.

He will need to see his veterinarian if his symptoms persist. If he did acquire the respiratory infection from his housemate, then post-nasal drop could be making him nauseous. Although the area in your picture does look red and potentially inflamed I don't think it looks infected. It would be best for your vet to make that call in person - I'd recommend making an appointment to have them examine the area in person and until then you should prevent Rocco from licking the area. I doubt the drooling is related. Drooling can be related to a tooth problem (possibly something you can't see), nausea, pain or ingesting something that tastes bad. If the drooling continues you should bring this up to your vet as well.

Drooling can be a sign of dental disease, oral ulcers from ingesting toxins or from some medical conditions, or even nausea or pain. If you feel Leo's behavior is abnormal you should either recheck with your vet or get a second opinion elsewhere. A sedated oral exam might be helpful, or blood work might be recommended as well.

The drooling can be a sign of nausea in cats, but given that Rex hasn't had a change in activity, appetite, or anything else, I would keep an eye on him for now. It could be chewing on those plants has upset his stomach, and I would keep them out of reach. Try feeding him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If he's still drooling in another 24 hours after being on this diet or anything else changes from the normal, then I would have him seen by a vet.

Many cats will chatter their teeth while watching birds or other prey animals; however, chattering could alos be an indication of pain or neurological in nature.
