Is surgery safe for my cat with a stomach tumor and kidney issues?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 6.9 lbs

my 11 year old female cat diagnosed through ultrasound with a tumor on her exterior stomach on the dorsal side. apparently the tumor is well demarcated (no biopsy was done) Symptoms were vomiting over last 3 weeks, drinking lots of water, and weight loss (about 1.5 lbs) in one year.0 Blood test revealed early renal insufficiency with sdma at 16. Tumor is 3.5 - 4.5 cm. Questioning safety of surgery with renal issues. if tumor surgically removed, what are her chances of survival. If don't remove,

I'm sorry to hear that Sweetie has a stomach tumor! While that is a slightly elevated SDMA value, it is difficult to say exactly how her kidneys are doing without the remainder of her bloodwork. As long as Sweetie does not have spread of her cancer to other organs, especially the lungs, and her heart is functioning normally, anesthesia may be safe. She will also be on fluids throughout the surgery and monitored carefully. Your veterinarian can go over the risks associated with anesthesia with you considering the remainder of Sweetie's blood work. The prognosis for survival once the tumor is removed depends greatly on the type of tumor it is and how well the stomach is able to heal following surgery as well as if you elect to pursue chemotherapy. Certain tumor types, such as lymphoma, have a survival time of only several months following surgery. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any other questions you may have about Sweetie!

The danger of it depends on her health status, and her vet can give you the best estimate of this. Any surgery carries risk, but it can still be safe in a cat this age. My cat screams, has accidents, and one kidney. Is spaying safe?

Hello. The presence of only 1 kidney is a birth defect that can occur. If that kidney is fully functioning, as demonstrated by normal blood kidney values, & a normal urinalysis, then there is no reason that anesthesia will be any more of a concern then for a cat with 2 kidneys. I am not sure what you mean by an indifferent colon, other than if there is one congenital birth defect, other defects are possible. We had a case of a puppy born with a deformed hind leg, & when he was old enough for neutering, also found a completely abnormal reproductive tract as well as a deformed kidney. This dog is now 13 years old & going strong. Your kitty may require periodic blood work to make sure the kidney stays healthy, & possibly some type of special diet depending on how the colon actually affects the kitten's overall well being. My cat has cancer & kidney disease. Is doxorubicin safe to use?

Doxorubicin is a very effect chemotherapy drug but, with all medications, there can be side effects. Since your vet knows your cat's entire medical history, he/she is the best person to guide you with advice on the best treatment regime for your cat. I am assuming that your vet believes that this drug is needed to help treat your cat's cancer and the benefits outweigh any risks associated with the drug. Your vet will need to monitor his kidney values closely for any changes while taking the drug and discontinue, if needed. So sorry that your cat has a tumor and I really hope that he goes into remission.

Another option is to continue draining it on an as needed basis but that may get uncomfortable with time if you have to do it consistently. Anesthesia can be very safe if done appropriately. My old cat has a stomach tumor. How long does she have? Is it painful?

How lovely of you to think about finding this cat a home! She deserves a loving home for the remaining time she has left. The time she has left depends on the grade and stage of the tumor. It would be important to know if the cancer has spread, which would be a factor in how much time she has left. Without seeing her in person, I can't say how long she does have left. Yes cancer can be painful, but it would be up to the shelter vet to decide if pain medications are warranted or not. You should speak to the vet about that issue, and they can prescribe as needed. I would try to find her a home as soon as possible simply so she can spend her remaining time being loved and comforted, for however long that is. I hope this helps.
