My cat's stomach bite smells awful. Is it infected? What should I do?

Poor Babie! Wounds caused by other animals are very likely to get infected without treatment, so the best thing to do is to book Babie in with your vet. He may need sedation in order for the vet to see how deep the wound is, and will also likely need a course of antibiotics.

Poor Smudge. I would recommend taking smudge to a vet to have the wound checked out. IFs he is an outside cat I would be concerned about an abscess. Sometimes if cats have an abscess they will be very painful until it ruptures but than you will see the infection/smell. IF she does have an abscess she will need some antibiotics to help resolve the issue. Other possibilities are skin mites, parasites or fungal issues. A vet visit would be best. This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). The area should be shaved first and washed profusely with clean water. Disinfection can be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths twice daily. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching. Sudocream or zinc oxide cream can be applied on the wound after cleaning and drying it up. Keep him indoors and keep in touch for updates. Poor Jojo! She should be examined by a vet to evaluate the wound and determine the best way to treat. Your vet may need to clean and flush the wound and then prescribe an antibiotic to treat an infection.

Unfortunately there are no pictures attached so that we may look at the wound. However, if there is an odor as you describe, redness and tenderness, then this certainly warrants a trip to your vet to have this looked at. If there is an open wound that is deep enough, it may also requires staples or sutures. At the very least it sounds as though Cezare needs to be on antibiotics and proper wound management. Continue the Betadine cleanings 1-2 times a day until you can get Cezare seen by your vet for further care. I would also consider changing the litter to shredded newspaper or a litter called Yesterday’s News, to prevent further contamination of the wound. I am so sorry for your cats injuries. Please take her to your vet to have these injuries cared for properly. These are too extensive for at home treatment. Until you can get her in to your vet for much needed wound management and antibiotics; it is best to clean this with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water to help antiseptically clean the area. You can also try shaving the hair around the wounds to help remove dirt from the area, but only do so if your pet tolerates it. If not, then its best to just let your vet do it, as this is a crucial step in allowing these areas to heal well. I do hope that you are able to seek medical care for Kiara soon!
