Why does my cat not meow, only squeak, after being sick young?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 11 months and 9 days old | 11 lbs

I got my kitten at 4 months old from a shelter. A month after I got him, he found out he had a very bad ear yeast infection along with ring worm. He’s almost a year old, but ever since we got him, he can’t meow. He’s not in pain, lethargic, or anything. He’s perfectly normal, but instead of meowing, he either goes “prrb?” Or kind of squeaks. No loss of appetite or anything. He’s also kind of tiny for his age. Did he just never get his meow since he was sick so young for so long?

Caboose is a cutie! An ear infection would not likely make him lose his meow but a severe respiratory tract infection could have damaged the vocal chords. Some cats however have very soft or absent meows and it’s not pathologic. It’s likely impossible to know which one is that play here. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
