Why does my cat not meow, only squeak, after being sick young?

If he's lost his voice and cannot meow, that can be a sign of a medical illness such as a respiratory infection. I wouldn't be concerned if this is how he has always sounded. Upper respiratory infections are very common in young kittens and sometimes swelling can affect the vocal folds - it's possible that he had some scar tissue formed. It's also possible that this is how he was born. If he does have trouble swallowing or breathing, or if he regurgitates or vomits you should see your vet.

A change in the voice generally indicates an illness. I recommend to have your kitten seen by the veterinarian who may prescribe medications to ease inflammation and any discomfort in the throat. I hope Peabo starts feeling better quickly and please feel free to post any additional questions.

I’m wondering if you meant to say that Kitty is trying to meow but unable to make noise. Sometimes a chest cold or upper respiratory infection could cause laryngitis and make it difficult to meow - this usually resolves with time. If she seems to be gagging or having trouble swallowing you should recheck with your veterinarian. If this is not what you meant to ask feel free to repost your question.

A decrease in vocalization can be due to a variety of reasons, including an upper respiratory infection, a growth in the back of the throat, tracheal irritation, or another underlying issue. If your cat is otherwise happy, healthy, and eating, drinking, and acting normally, I would not be too concerned. Sometimes all you notice is a hoarse meow or a change in the sound of the meow and nothing else (like sneezing, ocular discharge, etc).
