My cat's meow is low, raspy, and quiet. What could be the cause?

Yesterday I noticed that my cats meow has become low, raspy, and quiet. Any idea why?

If your cat is otherwise happy, healthy, and eating, drinking, and acting normally, I would not be too concerned. If however your cat is not acting like herself she may have an upper respiratory infection or something going on.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your question. Not all cats will vocalize and some can be very quiet. This does not indicate she is dealing with an illness. As long as her energy level is normal, is eating / drinking normal amounts and urinating / defecating ok I would not be concerned. If there are any other changes that indicate she is sick (inappetance, vomiting, diarrhea, sneezing, coughing, etc.) I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Voice change can be caused by many things. Cats do not get colds like people do. Most cats are exposed to several upper respiratory viruses over their lifetime that can flare up occasionally causing sneezing, runny eyes or nose, and occasionally voice change. A change can also occur with anything going on with the larynx (voice box) including trauma, masses (benign or malignant), nerve or muscle disorders, etc. Additionally some cats who have asthma or heartworm disease may manifest this with a voice change. So, if your kitty is exhibiting any other symptoms and/or is not feeling well the best plan would be to have your family vet examine her. This sign could be compatible with an upper respiratory tract inflammation/infection or possibly to a chronic pharingitis (inflammatory, allergic, infective). My cat is lazy, has a raspy meow, but no other symptoms. What's wrong?

It could just be her attitude, or she could be sick. Upper respiratory infections, nerve issues, polyps or masses in the throat, and hyperthyroidism could cause lethargy and a change in "voice." If you are concerned about Melo being seing, then I would recommend that you have her examined by a vet. They can do a thorough exam and discuss diagnostics or treatment if there is concern.

My kitten's meow is weak and raspy. Why is she sleeping so much?

Hello. It sounds like your kitten has a respiratory infection. Kittens are prone to lots of different infections but I would have her seen by your vet as soon as you can because she probably needs medication to clear whatever is causing the raspy breathing. There is also a chance she could have feline asthma and they can check for that with an x-ray. Best of luck to you and your kitten!

My cat can't meow, and his voice is very low. What's going on?

Sometimes all you notice is a hoarse meow or a change in the sound of the meow and nothing else (like sneezing, ocular discharge, etc).
