My cat lost his voice and can't meow. Is he sick or just quiet?

A decrease in vocalization can be due to a variety of reasons, including an upper respiratory infection, a growth in the back of the throat, tracheal irritation, or another underlying issue. I would recommend having him evaluated by your regular veterinarian to determine what the underlying cause may be, and to determine a treatment plan if needed. Good luck!

It could be that George is suffering from a respiratory infection causing him to lose his meow and sound very hoarse. I would call the vet in the morning to make an appointment for him because it's been ongoing for a week. The vet can diagnose if he does have a respiratory infection, and may be able to prescribe medications to help him. Best of luck.

Caboose is a cutie! An ear infection would not likely make him lose his meow but a severe respiratory tract infection could have damaged the vocal chords. Some cats however have very soft or absent meows and it’s not pathologic. It’s likely impossible to know which one is that play here. Since it has been three days since your cat's symptoms began, I recommend having him evaluated by your veterinarian to check for throat infections or other sources of irritation of the larynx. You may need to feed a soft, bland diet and keep him as stress free as possible during his treatment and recovery.

Sometimes all you notice is a hoarse meow or a change in the sound of the meow and nothing else (like sneezing, ocular discharge, etc). Yes, they can. Sometimes it can be temporary, but othertimes it can be a sign of a medical problem. Hopefully since he is so young, its nothing thats major or concerning, BUT, i wouls recommend an exam to be sure. They will do full exam of mouth, ears, throat, chest and heart and guide you from there.

Loss of appetite can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. Sometimes loss of voice can be seen in cats that are very weak. I recommend that you have Teddy evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment.
