My female cat is spraying brown liquid. Is it normal or a UTI?

Hello, sorry to hear about Mystique. This could be early evidence of a urinary tract infection which may require medications. Female cats are more likely to get urinary tract infections and can show signs such as urinating outside of the litter box, drinking excessive water, urinating more frequently, having a decreased appetite, or even vomiting and having diarrhea. That must be so frustrating for you! I recommend taking her into your vet if you haven't already to rule out a medical cause behind this behavior. Cats with a UTI will urinate everywhere, and she will need antibiotics to treat it if she does have one. Once a medical cause is ruled out, I would recommend spaying her. Female cats will mark to attract a male, and spaying her will help decrease this behavior. Even if it is a UTI causing this, I would still recommend spaying her. She may continue to mark to attract a male, and spaying will have many health benefits for her, including prevention of a pyometra ( a life threatening infection of the uterus) in addition to decreasing the marking behavior.

If the liquid is urine, then I would be concerned about her kidney function because the brown color could suggest blood in the urine or possibly toxin ingestion. If the liquid is feces then she likely has severe diarrhea that could lead to dehydration. Either way, it is important that you take Willow to a veterinarian to figure out what is going on and to get her treated.

This behavior can be a sign of a medical illness, such as a UTI or bladder stone. I would recommend taking Kali into your vet tomorrow for an exam. Your vet can do routine blood tests and a urinalysis to see if she does have a UTI or bladder stones. If she has a UTI, she will need antibiotics to treat it. Bladder stones may need to be removed surgically, or can be managed with diet.

As your cat is spayed, it is possible that the discharge you are seeing is coming from the urethra rather than the vagina as both open up into a common vestibule in the body. Dark brown secretions may indicate blood or infection in the urine, and bringing in a sample of your cat's urine to your local vet can be used to determine if this is the case. You may see other signs of illness such as more frequent trips to the bathroom, attempting to go without success, yowling, or pain and irritation. Infections are usually treated with a round of antibiotics as well as switching to a urinary friendly diet. Increasing your cats water consumption will also help reduce further infections. In some very rare cases, part of the uterus can be left behind during a spay which may become infected. Signs of infection include swelling of the abdomen, extreme pain and lethargy, and greenish or yellow discharge in addition to other possible discharge. This is a serious condition which should be seen by a veterinarian immediately.

It sounds like your cat might be marking, which some female cats will do. If there is no squatting and the tail is high up over her back this may be territory marking and not urination - a normal cat behavior for claiming her territory, particularly if there are other cats in the area
