My cat has a sore throat & high ALT. What natural liver-safe remedies?

Poor Chatter! Feeding a diet aimed at skin health will actually be beneficial to the lining of the throat as well. Royal Canin and Nutro are both good diets that would be beneficial. Giving him an additional omega 3 fatty acid supplement for cats will also help to decrease inflammation. Lastly, it's possible a virus is also at play here and could be causing some inflammation in the throat. Since this is your first time experiencing this, it may be worthwhile to have him examined and see if the doctor suspects a virus is the real cause. Some of these viruses may respond to cat supplement called Lysine. It's always best to gather information and then move forward with any preventive measures. I hope this helps.

I'm so sorry to hear about your kitties! Unfortunately, there is no evidence that homeopathic remedies like these work. My other concern is that this is a pretty high concentration of alcohol. I'm sure the dose is small, but still, I worry that it could be potentially harmful. If you are looking for a natural support for herpes virus, I recommend trying Lysine. This is an amino acid that we think may help interrupt the herpes life cycle. It is very safe for any cat in the household and may be used long term to help prevent flare-ups. A few veterinary approved products I like are Vetoquinol Viralys (L-Lysine) Oral Gel for Cats and Duralactin Feline L-lysine Cat Supplement. Just follow the directions on label. If any cat has squinting eyes, is not eating, or seems very lethargic, it is time to visit your vet as these signs may indicate a secondary eye ulcer or bacterial infection that requires medication. I'm sorry to hear that your cat has some elevated liver enzymes. Those medications are not ones that we commonly use in the US, but your vet would not have prescibed them if they were not safe to use. Large amounts of garlic or onion can cause a problem in red blood cells in cats, but garlic oil is generally only a 0.05% solution, so it should not be a concern. No it would be highly unlkiley that a food intolerance would cause elevated liver levels - especially when they were elevated even before you changed the diet. I would recommend getting a veterinary herbalist to review all of the herbs to ensre nothing here could be causing the inflammation as well as further investigation such as ultrasound and possibly biopsy.

You can try finding this in milk thistle, silymarin, or Vitamin E. Though none of them will actually heal the liver. They, and Denamarin, are antioxidants that can help protect the liver from further damage, but they cannot reverse damage that has already occurred.

I'm sorry Gab is sick! Definitely continue to give him the medication as prescribed by his vet. Keep in mind that being sick from liver problems can also lead to vomiting. His nose being wet is normal, and his gums should be pink. It is concerning that he is vomiting his cat food, but please do not give him raw chicken. That could also contribute to the vomiting in that it can and does upset a cat's stomach. It's fine that he has some boiled white meat chicken (no bones), and you can try feeding him that for a couple of days to see if that helps with the vomiting. If it does stop, then slowly add back in his normal diet. Make sure Gab is getting a kitten formulated food, as he needs higher amounts of calcium, protein, and calories to support his growth, and a kitten food will provide that for him. I hope this helps!

Depo-Medrol injections are a common treatment choice for skin issues such as allergies, so this makes sense given her symptoms. A low neutrophil count doesn't really have anything to do with the liver, so I wonder if there may have been some other abnormal values on Taira's lab work that your vet was concerned about. Since you aren't quite sure why this was recommended, I would suggest calling the vet to discuss - he/she should be happy to explain the reasoning behind it. Since pilling Taira is difficult and stressful for both of you, he/she may also be able to suggest an alternative option that would be easier to manage if a supplement is still needed.
