Why did my vet prescribe liver supplements for my cat's scratching?

Depo-Medrol is a long-acting steroid that is often used as a symptomatic treatment for itchy skin problems in cats - if Taira has allergies or some other type of chronic skin issue, the Depo-Medrol will not cure the problem, but only relieve her symptoms for a few weeks. If the itching recurs once the steroid wears off (usually 4-6 weeks in cats), you may want to talk with your vet about options for diagnosing the skin problem and getting her started on a better long-term treatment plan. Based on these lab results, I do not see any reason for the liver supplement - I would suggest giving your vet a call to clarify this since you have some concerns about it. He/she should be able to explain why it was prescribed.

I recommend to either have Lilly checked for hyperthyroidism or try a diet trial with a hydrolyzed protein for 12 weeks. Call your vet to discuss which option seems like the best for Lilly. Unfortunately, Allergies to something in the environment, food allergies, flea allergies and hyperthyroidism will all look the same so you must start ruling them out one by one. You may also look into joining a clinic like Banfield or VCA that offer wellness programs. These programs are not insurance but the office visits are free and you get a discount of services and medications outside of the program. You will need to check and verify details with any of these clinics in your area. Not every service will be covered by the program. If food changes haven't helped, it is possible there is another issue such as an environmental allergen, or an issue such as infection/yeast/parasites, etc. It would be a good idea to bring Creature into your vet for a full exam to rule out these other issues.

Hi, and thanks for your question. This could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. The treatment would depend on the underlying cause. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. Salmon oil is a great choice. I think though that the primary condition needs to be treated for this to get better. So if this is due to allergies, these have to be addressed for it to improve. Supplements in this scenario can only help if the primary condition is being treated. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

The only thing that can help reduce the reaction to the food is steroids, prednisolone is usually very helpful and relatively safe if given in low dosage, you will have to consult a vet in order to get a prescrition.

Poor Maggie. I think there has been a misunderstanding. They probably gave 20mg (milligrams) which is equal to either 0.5mL (milliliters) or 1.0mL of depo-medrol depending on the concentration your vet carries. The general dose that most vets use is 20mg depomedrol per cat every 8 weeks as needed. I seriously doubt anyone would give 20mL of this drug. Also, it could be wearing off quicker if there are more allergens causing her skin to act up. With it being the changing of the seasons, this very well could be the issue. Also make sure she is on a high quality flea preventative. One flea bite can cause a major allergic reactions in cats with her problem. If she needs another depomedrol shot, I would talk to your vet and see if they would be willing to repeat the injection as early as 6-8 weeks during high allergy season.
