My cat has high liver enzymes. Is garlic oil in his meds safe?

Hi and thanks for using PetCoach! Sorry to hear about Toby. Dehydration shouldn't affect creatinine. It affects BUN. Not sure what caused the slight rise in creatinine but that usually means there may be some kidney dysfunction. It's not that elevated and could be laboratory error also since the BUN is normal. Liver enzymes can become raised for many reasons. Liver inflammation, infection, pancreatitis, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, toxin exposure, among many other things. I don't think feeding a wet food is a bad idea, it forces the cat to take more fluids in since canned food has a high water content. I would also recommend a liver supplement to address the rise in the liver enzymes. It is unlikely that diet alone is the cause of significant decrease to liver function. I would agree that Royal Canin and Hill's are not very different in terms of dietary quality. I feel that starting on a liver diet at this point based on one blood test is very premature and that further diagnostics are likely warranted. Some possible causes of increased liver values including endocrine conditions, liver shunts, hepatitis, bile duct / gall bladder issues, liver / gall bladder tumors, or fatty liver disease. Depending on the nature and magnitude of the elevation, it may be insignificant as well if Maki's findings were not coupled with any clinical signs of illness. Some additional diagnostic testing to look into things more would be additional more specific blood work, radiographs, and ultrasound. Rather than dietary change, there are more target liver supplements. One that comes to mind is called Denamarin. There is a feline formulation available that would work fine. Hope this helps.

It would be best to not give Ghasaq any medications without first speaking with your veterinarian. For minor sore throat pain, you can offer your cat a half teaspoon of raw, unprocessed honey once or twice daily until your vet becomes available. Discuss liver friendly supplements at that time as well as possible causes for the elevation in liver function tests.

You're right that cats can be very sensitive to essential oils, so it's always recommended to be very cautious when using these oils around them. If Odie is acting normal (eating and drinking, active, etc.), it's unlikely that he would have been negatively affected by any essential oils that you may have used in the past. You could take him to your vet for a check-up and blood work to check his liver and kidney function, if you want to be absolutely sure - but if he's clinically doing fine, he's probably okay :) In the future, it would be best to double-check the safety of any oil you are considering for use in your home to avoid problems.

I'm sorry Gab is sick! Definitely continue to give him the medication as prescribed by his vet. Keep in mind that being sick from liver problems can also lead to vomiting. His nose being wet is normal, and his gums should be pink. It is concerning that he is vomiting his cat food, but please do not give him raw chicken. That could also contribute to the vomiting in that it can and does upset a cat's stomach. It's fine that he has some boiled white meat chicken (no bones), and you can try feeding him that for a couple of days to see if that helps with the vomiting. If it does stop, then slowly add back in his normal diet. Make sure Gab is getting a kitten formulated food, as he needs higher amounts of calcium, protein, and calories to support his growth, and a kitten food will provide that for him. I hope this helps!

It is likely Steve did not ingest a toxic dose. Monitor for lethargy, pale gums, difficulty breathing or exercise intolerance for the next 24-72 hours. You may see some minor stomach upset which, in the absence of other symptoms, can be managed with a short fast followed by a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. If he develops any of the other symptoms, have him seem by your veterinarian.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Xanthan gum is an emulsifier / thickening agent and is considered safe in dogs and cats. It is not a known GI irritant and the other ingredients should be ok as well. The only thing I would be hesitant to give Kitty is the garlic powder. I would not give these treats to Kitty because of the garlic. Garlic can cause serious problems as it is part of the allium (onion) family. I would find a product that does not contain onion / garlic and use that instead. I hope this helps!
