My cat has a sore ear for a week. Should I be concerned and see a vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Manx | Male | neutered | 3 years and 8 months old | 6 lbs

Hello! Cat Stevens seems to have a soar in his ear. Perhaps it is from playing with the other cat (both indoor cats, neutered)? Do you think it is something to be concerned about? We noticed this about a week ago. Thank you!

The scratch on Cat Stevens doesn't look to bad.

If he is scratching then I recommend an elizabethan collar so he doesn't scratch at it. If it is worse then it was a week ago, starts to swell, extends down into the ear canal or has discharge then I recommend bringing him to a veterinarian for evaluation.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It looks like he just has a small scratch/scab in this picture. If he is scratching or rubbing his ears a lot he may have an ear infection which would warrant a vet visit.
