My cat's ear got cut during neutering. How do I prevent infection?

Hello. It is difficult to tell if the neuter incision is OK, but it does not look too bad to me. If you are concerned, definitely get with your vet soon. As for the ear, I have NEVER heard of a veterinary practice clipping a cat's ear to signify it has been neutered when it is a personally owned cat. In many communities, wild & feral cats that have no owners are trapped, neutered & the ear clipped to signify the surgery has been done. These cats are then released back into their pre-captured territories to live out their lives. I would find out if this is a normal procedure in your area & if not, I would definitely complain to the practice owner & possibly even to the your state veterinary board. I can understand a small tattoo mark to signify the surgery ( although it is pretty obvious in a male cat ), but this is totally uncalled for & I am so sorry this happened to your pet. The incisions do not appear to be infected in the images supplied. Confirm all three cats have e-collars (cones) in place to prevent licking. The cones should stay on for at least 10-14 days post op. Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite, odor, excessive bruising, active bleeding or discharge.

It looks like Mordred may have been pulling out her sutures. In 2 pictures there are 3 while in the third picture there are only two. I would recommend taking her back to the veterinarian to have them evaluate her and also recommend getting her an elizabethan collar. Typically after this procedure, it is best to keep them quiet for about 10 days but cats are hard to keep quiet so we do the best we can to help them recover. It is not quite normal, however it is possible that he was licking the incision and aggravated it. If he keeps licking, it will not heal like it should and he may even lick bacteria into the wound. You may want to put an e-collar on him so he cannot reach the wound. It should then heal without problem.

Bite wounds are often worse under the surface of the skin than they appear externally. I'm glad to hear that Alfred does not appear to be forming a swollen abscess, but he probably should receive a course of antibiotics from his vet. You can try keeping the open wounds clean with an antiseptic soap (such as Betadine or Chlorhexidine), but avoid putting hydrogen peroxide on the wounds. Be sure to keep Alfred from scratching at the wound and put an e-collar on him if necessary. I hope that all goes well!

Many cats get their ears sliced during a fight and the ear usually heals by itself. Just watch for swelling, and oozing of pus (infection). If that occurs you will need to take your kitty to a vet. Do not remove the crust or put ointment on it. It should be ok.
