My cat has an eyelid sore. How long can I wait to see the vet?

Pet's info: Cat | American Longhair | Male | neutered | 6 years old | 12 lbs

There is a sore along my cat's (around 6 years of age) eylid. Does this look like a lesion. How concerned should I be. How long can I wait to take him to the vet.

Poor Pip! Looks like he has a little abrasion there. It’s reasonable to put an e-collar on him and wait a few days to see if it starts looking better on its own. Since it is so close to the eye, there’s nothing over the counter that you can safely put on it at home, just keep it clean (water only) and dry and use a cone (ecollar) to keep him from rubbing at it. If it’s not looking better in 3-4 days, take him to the vet. If it starts looking worse, if he starts developing additional clinical signs, or if he starts having additional sores show up elsewhere, don’t wait, take him in.

My cat has an irritated eye scratch. Should I see a vet or wait?

Keep an eye on it and if it does not look better by tomorrow, or if he starts to scratch at it or rub his face, then get him seen by your vet as soon as possible. The worry is that if he starts rubbing or scratching, that he'll injure the eye itself and that will require more intensive treatment than a simple scratch or mild eye infection.

My cat's eye is bothering him. Can I use a rinse or wait for the vet?

Hello. I am so sorry for your worries with Parker. It does look like the conjunctiva & third eyelid are a bit swollen, but the rest of the eye & cornea are very quiet. Unless Parker is very uncomfortable with his eye, & you are worried that by pawing he could do more harm, you can wait for his appointment in the morning. You just need to use your best judgement as to whether this can wait or not. I see no reason not to use a rinse approved for use in a cat's eye, but if it seems to irritate the eye more, then stop its use & just have Parker seen in the morning. My 14-year-old cat has a watery, red eye. Should I go to the ER vet?

I always lean toward being more careful with eye conditions. Even though you could likely wait 5 days, I would probably go to the emergency vet if it was my cat. And it is likely uncomfortable for Roxie, so I would like to get it treated. Eye conditions can become very severe very quickly, so I would have it evaluated sooner rather than later. My cat has an open wound near its eye. Is it serious? When to see a vet?

Tinkerbell's eye lid does appear to have some sort of tear or ulceration. This could be related to trauma or a viral infection. Tears on the eyelid should be care for quickly. I recommend to have Tinkerbell examined by his veterinarian within the next day. Make sure to protect the area from rubbing by having him wear an elizabethan collar at all times. My cat has a raw skin patch above her eye. Is it serious or urgent?

Thank you for providing images. The area does not look severe enough to arrant an immediate visit. Keep the spot clean and dry. You can place an e-collar (cone) on Lavender to prevent rubbing or pawing. Monitor for increasing redness or hair loss, bleeding, discharge or lethargy. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian sooner rather than later.

What's this bald spot or bump on my cat's eye? Vet or home care?

Ouch! Since that is so close to the eye, it should be seen by a vet in person just to make sure it doesn't become infected and spread to the eye itself, and to try and figure out what may have caused the initial injury. Your vet can also provide any pain or antibiotic medications as needed to help the spot heal. Until you can get to the vet, it is best to keep the spot clean and dry, and make sure that the eye isn't bothered. An Elizabethan (cone) collar is also a good idea to prevent scratching at it which can lead to infection or accidental scratching of the eye.
