My cat's still sneezing, coughing, watery eye after vet. Should he go back?

Poor guy. He sounds like he may have a severe upper respiratory infection and it is worrisome that he is also coughing. I would most certainly take him in to be seen. The vet will do a proper exam and testing (if needed) to determine the extent of the infection and also to make sure nothing more serious is going on here, such as asthma. If sneezing is the only sign, it's fine to wait until Monday to have him seen by a vet. I would rush him into an ER vet if he stops eating, becomes lethargic, or starts having trouble breathing. Sometimes colds don't go away on their own, and I would have him seen by a vet. He may need medications to treat his symptoms, and the vet can prescribe that. It also sounds like he has an eye infection, and those are considered quite serious because leaving them untreated can lead to vision loss. That requires an immediate trip to the vet, and if you don't want to assume financial responsibility for him, you can take him to the SPCA. They can treat his symptoms, and can find a home for him. If you do want to take him to the vet, I would have him seen ASAP. There is few things you can do at home for him that will work well in conjunction with medications from the vet. First, you can try starting him on an L-lysine supplement - this is an amino acid that has been shown to help the immune system fight off respiratory infections more effectively. Enisyl and Viralys are both good brands, and can be purchased over the counter without a prescription - just follow the dosing instructions on the label based on your cat's weight. If he's congested, you can also try using a humidifier or bringing him into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections.

It's highly possible that they're all experiencing a flare-up of feline herpesvirus, which tends to produce mild upper respiratory signs such as sneezing and ocular discharge. Most cats already have the virus in their bodies but don't have symptoms, but living in a stressful environment (shelters) or going through stressful events (having a new cat brought home) can trigger recurrence of the active infection. If it's been a week and a half they likely do need to see the vet, however most of them will improve with supplementation with the amino acid lysine and supportive care.

Hello. It is good that Echo is still eating & acting well. Most of these upper respiratory infections usually just need a week or so to run their course. I am not sure why your vet gave him a steroid injection for bad breath ( this was your cortisone ) unless he actually had lesions in his mouth. This might have exasperated his previous infection to continue into this. I would not recommend giving anymore cortisone while Echo is trying to recover from this infection. The sneezing in bothersome, but not really worrisome as long as he feels fine. See how he is come Monday, & at this point it might be appropriate to treat with either another round of antibiotics or an antiviral medication. She does not need to go to the vet at this point. These upper respiratory infections are generally viral, so there are no simple medications that will clear the infection.
