My cat died suddenly with weird symptoms. Was it rabies or poisoning?

I am so sorry for the loss of your poor kitty. Her symptoms don't suggest she got infected with Rabies, but instead I suspect she was having a severe anaphylactic reaction to the vaccine, especially since her symptoms started within 24 hrs of her immunizations. The Rabies vaccine is NOT a live virus, so pets can't get rabies from the vaccine. Also even if a pet has a particular vaccine in the past, this does not mean they can't have a reaction in the future unfortunately. Also since the Rabies vaccine has clinically been shown to last a bit longer than the 1 year mark, your pet was likely still protected. Again I am sorry your pet was not able to recover from this sudden turn of events. I send my condolences to you and your family through this difficult time. And unless Scruff was exposed to a rabid animal within 10 days of being symptomatic, then rabies transmission is very unlikely, unless there is more to the story than what you have mentioned here. I am so sorry your cat died recently, please accept my condolences for your loss. The massive wounds may have been the cause of his death. He could have had internal injures you weren't aware of it, and that could have lead to him vomiting food and then blood. Unfortunately, without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain what caused his death. I recommend having a necropsy (an autopsy for animals) done on him, which may give you some answers as to what caused his death. Again, I'm so sorry for your loss :-(

I am very sorry you lost your cats! That is terrible. Unfortunately the only way to find out what killed your kitties is to have a post mortem done. There are so many possible causes, starting with household cleaners, insecticides, rodenticide, snake bites, toxins, and also infectious disease. From these signs alone it is not possible to say what could be the cause. Again, I am very sorry.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Dilated eyes and drooling from the mouth are signs of either a neurological disease, or more likely a toxin. I would recommend getting a large box and a large thick blanket. I would suggest catching your cat with the blanket and getting him into a box, and bringing him into your vet for a check up. If he isn't vaccinated for rabies this could be a concern, as the behaviour is very strange, however as previously mentioned, a toxin is more likely. Best of luck with Autum.

There are three very common diseases that cats get that can cause his symptoms: diabetes, kidney failure and hyperthyroidism. If left untreated, all can cause death. I doubt a virus has much to do with it but of course it is possible. As for the vitamins, if they were made for cats that is not likely the cause. If it was not cat vitamins then it is possible he was overdosed. Not all vitamins are safe in large doses. I am sorry this happened and that he passed. In the future please get your cat examined by a veterinarian before the disease has progressed to this point. When they start losing weight that should be a good indicator that something is wrong especially if they are not eating and lethargic as well. Best wishes.

Oh no, I'm so sorry that both of your cats have died recently! You are correct that they could have gotten into something toxic causing their symptoms, but unfortunately without seeing them in person, I can't say what that toxin might be. You could take their bodies into a vet for a necropsy (an autopsy for cats) which may give you some answers. If it's too late to take them in because you've already buried them, then I recommend looking out for similar symptoms in any other cats you may have at home. Should you see those symptoms again, rush them into a vet immediately for treatment. Again, I'm so sorry for your loss :-(

I'm very sorry for your loss Debbie, he looked like a very lovely cat. FIV could have been the cause although usually you would see gradual deterioration rather than an acute picture such as what he experienced, i cannot know what has caused it for sure but because of the very sudden symptoms i would say poisoning is a very probable cause.
