My cat is lethargic after Teef for Life Protektin 42+K. Is it safe?

There have been some studies evaluating its toxic effects, mainly when used as a gel substrate in eye medications in animals and this is what I was able to find regarding this: Use: Carbomer-based gels significantly extend contact of solutes or suspended solids with the corneal surface Overdosage: Doses up to 1 g/kg PO in dogs x 6 mo resulted in no observable clinical effects and no pathological lesion No toxic effects expected; should signs develop, treatment should be symptomatic Systemic toxicosis not expected due to poor bioavailability So therefore, there are no concerns here when this compound is ingested in animals (dogs or cats). This is typically the case when dealing with over the counter supplements or dental products in general. If toxicity concerns were there, a product would likely require a prescirption and would not be available as an over the counter. I think you should switch to a different product as the active ingredient in whatever you are using doesn't seem to agree with Shadow. It is better to switch because sometimes the lethargy can progress to a worse type of reaction with each application. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

He may need IV fluids and treatment for acidosis. (If his blood has become acidic from the medication) You can also call animal poison control, as they would have the best information regarding overdosages of specific drugs. Hello. As you can see on the product, this does have the seal of the VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Council), but when I look closer at the recommendations they have, this product seems to be better for dogs, than cats. It is absolutely safe for cats, but if you want to use one truly recommended by the VOHC for cats, then look for Healthymouth Toothpast/Brush Kit Combination for cats. This is the only toothpaste type product they recommend specifically for cats & this was of February, 2022. If you cannot find the Healthymouth toothpast for cats, then the Petsmile product is perfectly fine to use on Sweetie. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

We currently use the powder formulation for dogs and cats but if they have treats for cats this should be absolutely safe to try. So cats are very sensitive to flea treatments, and her symptoms seem to match up with flea treatment toxicity (except for urinating outside the litter box). It may be that the Frontline is causing her problems. I would wash off the Frontline now, give her a bath to get it off if you applied it within the last 24 hours. If it's been more than 24 hours, have her seen by a vet now. Depending on when you applied the Fronline, either wait a week (if the Frontline was applied in the last 24 hours) or two weeks since the application (if apply longer than 24 hours ago), then use a different flea treatment program like Revolution or Advantage. I would not use Frontline again. As for urinating outside the box, this could be due to feline idiopathic cystitis. Stress can bring this on, and a reaction to flea treatment can be stressful. Have her seen by a vet for this. I hope this helps!

There are possible reactions associated with any medication or preventative product given to an animal though this would be an unusual reaction to a topical flea preventative like Bravecto. If the skin around at the site it was administered looks normal (not irritated or inflamed) and she is otherwise doing well, I would continue to watch her for now and have her evaluated by your veterinarian tomorrow if no improvement. If she appears to be too different to what she normally is, have her evaluated tonight to ensure she is not having an unusual reaction to the Bravecto. I think she is likely reacting to the application of the product because she can feel something in her skin that she is not used to rather than having a complication.
