My cat had a seizure. Should I be worried and take him to the vet?

My cat just had a grand mal seizure. This it's the frosty one he had ever had and he's around two years old. Should I worry about him?

I would recommend taking Monkey in to the vet. Toxins can cause seizures and while epilepsy can occasionally be seen in cats it's not common. He should be evaluated to see what caused the seizure.

Seizures in cats are more rare than dogs and are slightly more concerning. Potential causes include toxin exposure, infections and even organ disease.
Whereas with dogs we sometimes don't do too much if they only had one seizure with cats I recommend they go ahead and at least get examined by the veterinarian to ensure nothing is going on.

Seizures can develop at any age and in many cases only happen once, or very infrequently. All anti-seizure medications have side effects and it would not be recommended to treat unless the seizures were frequent or if the first seizure was prolonged (more than 5mins). Given the brief nature and no previous history it would be ok to watch and wait to see if signs develop or progress in the future - it can help to keep a diary to track any unusual behaviors or symptoms as these may build up a pattern of what if anything is developing or trigerring seizures

It could be an idiopathic seizure, meaning there is no known cause. My cat's littermate died from seizures. Should I worry about my cat?

Although there are some feline viral diseases that would typically be present in litter mates and can cause neurologic disease, I would suspect that you would have noticed that one or both cats were sick prior to this if that were the case. In a 2 year old cat the most likely cause of seizures is a toxin exposure, so I would be sure to check the area very thoroughly for any potential hazards, such as antifreeze, that may have precipitated this.

My cat is suddenly having seizures and diarrhea. Is this serious?

Odie needs to see a veterinarian ASAP!! This is obviously not normal. Seizures in cats are not a good sign. Based on the fact that he is so young my guess is that he may have ingested a toxin/poison of some sort or sustained some trauma. There is nothing I can tell you to do over the internet. You have to have a diagnosis before any treatment can be offered. This is serious so please get him to a vet as soon as you can. Best wishes.

My 6-month-old kitten had a seizure. Why is he still acting strange?

Oh dear! Poor Sterling. Seizures are definitely not normal, especially in a kitten this young - this could be caused by a neurologic disease like FIP (feline infectious peritonitis), toxoplasmosis, a liver shunt, or some type of toxicity. I would definitely recommend taking him to the vet, especially since he's still acting abnormal a week later. Your veterinarian can do a full neurologic exam and may also recommend lab work or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Seizures can occur due to many reasons that go from a toxicity, metabolic diseases, inflammatory diseases and even tumors. I highly recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. Diagnostics that will be recommended will include bloodwork and advanced imaging such as an MRI. I'm glad the experts gave you good information about Meow Moo! Oh no, from your description, it does sound like he could have had a seizure. That is concerning, and seizures in cats could be due to trauma to the brain, blood glucose too high or too low, kidney disorders, or idiopathic (no known cause). I would have him seen by a vet first thing in the morning. If an incidence like this happens again, I would try to film it for the vet to see. Definitely take him into the vet in the morning so he can be examined, diagnosed, and treated.
