My cat's eardrum ruptured. Does it heal naturally without medication?

Poor guy. It sounds like his ear infection was bad enough to possibly cause a rupture of the ear drum if he is dizzy or ataxic. If this is the case, then it can take 2-3 weeks for resolution of clinical signs as the ear drum grows back. His symptoms should not get worse and he should be showing gradual improvement if you have been treating for over a week, so if this is not the case then a rechk appt should be scheduled with your vet. In additions, your vet can prescribe some motion sickness medication to help him with his dizziness as well, so ask about this if it wasn't already prescribed. You likely don't need to do anything to Purrcy's ear as they can typically heal the wound without any help. Watch it for any redness, swelling or discharge. If you want to apply a topical antibiotic you will need to put an elizabethan collar on Purrcy so that he cannot rub it off and then ingest it while grooming. If it starts looking infected, take him into the vets for antibiotics. It will likely heal within 10-14 days. I hope this helps!

It would be much easier for us to help you if you could give more information. How long have you been treating him? What antibiotic is he taking and how frequently? What ear drops are you using and how much/how frequent? One ear or both ears? Please post again with more information.

They heal at the same rate as other skin injuries within 10-14 days. they just have an increase blood supply to the area. The e collar needs to stay on that way she can’t scratch them out and delay healing.

This looks quite painful and possibly a ruptured pustule or blister? I would expect 4-6weeks for healing given the extent but if the redness has not reduced over the first 3weeks or the pain and discomfort is increasing it may be worth considering biopsy of the area or referral to a specialist dermatologist to rule out more sinister causes such as an ulcerative tumour

Place an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent further trauma. Have him examined by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER. He may need antibiotics for infection as well as pain management. Once the infection is under control, an ear mite medication can be administered. Acarexx is a mite specific medication that will kill most mites with a single treatment. Severe cases may need multiple treatment. Topicals such as Revolution or Advantage Multi may also be used to treat mite infection.
