My cat has severe ear mites and injured his ear. What now?

The ear mites need to be treated before surgery is performed on the hematoma. There are some ear mite treatments available at pet stores, but their quality isn't as good as prescription medications. I would recommend calling your local emergency clinic to see if they even carry ear mite medications - some don't carry them in stock.

I am sorry Muchacho is not feeling well. Yes, you can buy an e-collar typically over the counter at your local pet store. This would be a good idea if Muchacho is causing injury to his skin. However, if he is really itchy I would recommend taking him to the vet for treatment of the ear mites and maybe antibiotics for his skin. Typically the ear mites will not resolve just from being cleaned. I hope that helps

Hi, I am sorry to hear about Sparrow's ear. The inside of his ear looks clean as you have shown in the picture. The back/base of his ear unfortunately looks quite infected. It is great that you are keeping the Ecollar on to prevent him from scratching the ear. Sometimes topical treatment alone will not be able to heal this type of infection. The area looks very moist, either from infection or the ointment(s) that are being applied. Typically when cats have an infected area on their skin, we want the area dry and do not put on topical treatments. This wound would most likely heal very quickly with a visit to Sparrow's veterinarian. The doctor can clip and clean the wound with medical grade gentle cleansing solution and get Sparrow on antibiotics. The antibiotics (which needs a doctor prescription) is the main treatment to get this to heal. I cannot recommend any further over the counter treatments that would allow this to heal. I am sorry about that. I would recommend to keep him indoors only, keep the ecollar on, and hold off on the ointment so the area can dry up. The veterinary appointment can hopefully happen soon and Sparrow will be on his way to healing quickly. Best of luck.

Ear infections in cats can also be caused by yeast or bacteria, and are more common causes of ear infections in adult cats. Ear mites are more common in kittens. In order to treat Belle properly, she does have to see a vet, and vets will see pets for sickness. This counts, as leaving it untreated can lead to hearing loss. Give her vet a call to make her an appointment.

It sounds as though Bo is quite uncomfortable since she's scratching her ears excessively to the point of bleeding. While this is not a life-threatening emergency, it is certainly causing some degree of pain and discomfort, which necessitates a more urgent vet visit. It's likely that the ear mite medication didn't work because her issue may be caused by an ear infection with bacteria and/or yeast. Yes, it's safe to use Revolution on cat with ear mites, but your cat will still need to see the vet the aural hematoma. Revolution will not treat that, only the ear mites, and the hematoma will likely need to be drained and the ear flap sutured to prevent it from reoccurring. Please take your cat into the vet tomorrow if possible.

If Shredder has ear mites, the lesions on the edges of his ears are likely due to ear mites as well. Olive oil is not a very effective treatment for earmites. I would recommend a prescription treatment such as Revolution or Advantage multi for cats. These will kill the mites in 1-2 applications and allow Shredders ears to heal. Bonus these medications help prevent intestinal parasites and treat fleas and heartworm as well.
