My cat came back after 4 days, lethargic, not eating. What's wrong?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 15 years and 2 months old | 9 lbs

My cat disappeared and came back, he was gone for 4 days. When we found him on our porch he was covered in lint so our best guess is he was stuck in a basement but we don't know for sure, he was also covered in feces, we assume his own. we also assume he hasn't eaten in those 4 days either. He is very lethargic and won't leave the upstairs bedroom or eat or drink anything we bring him. Could you give us an idea of what is wrong?

I am sorry This happened to kasey. I would recommend taking him to a veterinarian immediately. I am not sure what caused this but now kasey needs immediate care. Kasey is most likely dehydrated and if he is not eating he could get fatty liver disease which is very difficult to treat. The feces could be soft/ diarrhea secondary to stress , toxins or something he got into when he was lost. I hope kasey feels better soon

Kasey may be very dehydrated if he had no access to food or water for 4 days. Based on what you are describing, and the fact that Kasey is an older cat, I would recommend taking him in to the vet as soon as possible to be checked out. Your vet will likely want to run some blood work to fully assess Kasey. I'm glad he made it home. Hopefully he can make a full recovery.

I'm sorry Kasey disappeared but it's great that he came back home! He could have been injured on his travels, he could have gotten into a fight with another animal, or he could have gotten into something toxic. He could also be suffering from a fatty liver from not eating for days, as cats are prone to developing them after not eating for 48-72 hours. A fatty liver is fatal without treatment, and it's quite serious that he is very lethargic, and isn't eating or drinking. I would consider this a medical emergency, and he needs veterinary care now. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

My cat came back weak and won't eat. Is it an emergency?

If Molly was missing for one week, it could be she was injured or became ill on her adventure. It's extremely serious she has had no appetite for two days. When a cat doesn't eat going on 72 hours, they develop a fatty liver which is fatal without treatment. This is something that needs to be seen by a vet now, I would consider this a medical emergency. Why is my lost cat vomiting, not eating, and eyes wide open?

Probably severe dehydration is her main issue at this time. She may also have developed a liver condition called hepatic lipidosis which occurs when cats don't eat for many days. Is also possible that she was injured when she was out and missing, and she may have some pain and or an infection related to that. Take her in to the vet as soon as you can today! Why is my cat not eating, playing, and lethargic after our trip?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Mr. Fluffy! I am curious on how old Mr. Fluffy is. If he hasn't eaten well while you were gone either because he was scared or because he is suffering from a medical condition he needs to see a Vet. Cats can not go longer than 3-5 days with out eating before getting even sicker from fatty liver disease. I would take Mr. Fluffy to the emergency room today or as soon as your Vet opens Monday to have an exam and blood work ran. Check the whites of his eyes and if the whites look yellow he should go to the emergency room today. I hope this helps and I wish Mr. Fluffy a speedy recovery!

Why is my cat lethargic after coming inside, not eating or peeing?

I would recommend keeping a very close eye on your cat for the next 12 to 24 hours. When cats are free to roam outside they are more prone to getting in fights and ingesting something toxic. If she does not eat this evening or tomorrow morning and she is still acting lethargic and I would recommend taking her in to your vet to be checked out.

My cat is lethargic, not eating or drinking for 3 days. What to do?

Your cat really needs to be seen by a veterinarian for proper diagnosis and treatment. She is likely dehydrated from not eating or drinking well and will require subcutaneous or intravenous fluids. Because she hasn't been eating, she is also at risk of developing a condition called hepatic lipodosis. This disease is the most common cause of metabolic liver failure. At home encourage your cat to eat by offering highly palatable food, such as fish-flavored canned cat food or Stage 1 strained chicken or turkey baby food (no onions or garlic). If necessary, gently open her mouth and place a small amount of moist food on her tongue. Watch to see if she swallows it. If she does, place a couple more dollops of food on her tongue, then encourage her to eat a bit on her own.
