My cat refuses cat food and only eats tuna. What should I do?

I would first make sure that she does not have a medical condition that is making her not want to eat; especially if this is a new behavior. This sounds very frustrating! I'm glad to hear that Rose is active and at a healthy body weight, but eating solely chicken and tuna does not provide a balanced diet for a growing kitten. Since Rose is willing to eat the chicken and tuna, try shredding these foods into very tiny pieces. Then begin mixing chicken and tuna in with her kitten foods. Start by mixing the foods 50/50, then gradually wean off the chicken and tuna. If this is not successful, you may need to try other brands, textures, or flavors of kitten foods. Some cats prefer kibble to canned foods, so that is one other thing to try. By 2.5 months of age, there is no need to continue giving her the kitten milk replacer, as water alone is sufficient. It is not unusual for cats to at some point get bored of their diet just needing a change to continue to eat well. You may add canned tuna to the food which may increase her appetite. If there are only two available foods for kittens in your geographic region I would feed the one that your cat is most likely to consume without problems. If for some reason your cat begins to have issues with that type of food I would feed the other one but consider adding something like chicken broth or tuna juice to it. Hope this helps!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your cat. I do not like to institute a diet change until a cat is healthy if at all possible. They should be eating and drinking on their own. If you offer a new food when they are still ill, it is easy for them to develop a food aversion. So I would feed him his regular diet or the tuna until he is eating drinking well. Then slowly try very small amounts of the z/d. It may need to be a very gradual transition for him. I hope this information helps!

I am sorry this is happening with Minu, it is a very common problem with cats. First of all rest assured that if she is having wet food she gets most of her water intake from that source. I worry about the tuna juice too and I would suggest stopping that, as you mentioned the salt content concerns me. Instead I would suggest trying a water fountain. Many cats prefer fresh or running water that the fountains provide. There are many designed to cats on the market. It would be ok to eat a small amount of chicken, as long as it is baked and not fried. She also needs to eat cat food because an all chicken diet is not a nutritional balanced diet for a cat. If she won't eat both and is only looking for chicken than you may need to feed only cat food so she will start eating it again. You could try different varieties and see which one she eats best.
