My cat has a red lump sticking out of his butt. Is it serious?

Hello! That bump looks a little swollen and red, and it could simply be a wound. I would clean the area with warm water and antiseptic soap, and keep an eye on it. If the swelling gets larger, Chiky starts having trouble passing feces, she starts scooting on her behind, licking the area a lot, and/or you see pus, then I would take her into the vet. In that case, I would be concerned that the wound may be infected, or it could be something else causing the swelling such as infected and impacted anal sacs or intestinal worms. Thank you for providing pictures of Butters's lump! If he had an accessed anal sac, the area right around his anus would be swollen and pain, and you would likely see blood in the feces, constipation, and/or painful defecation. From the picture, this looks like a growth, which could be benign or malignant. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. I would have Butters seen by a vet tomorrow to diagnose what is causing the lump so it can be treated as needed.

Going towards the right into the white fur the light pink tubular structure is the prepuce (sheath where penis lives) and the redder center is the penis itself. Everything in your picture is normal. Hmm... from your photo, I can't tell for sure what this might be. You're right that it looks like a piece of litter, but it could also possibly be a piece of fecal material that is still inside the rectum. If Toby is acting normal, I would recommend waiting 24 hours (or until he poops again) to see if it's still there. It may pass on its own the next time he has a bowel movement. If it's still present by this time tomorrow, or if it begins to bleed or show any other signs of a problem, it would be best to have him checked by a vet - he/she can do a rectal exam to palpate the area and get a better idea of what may be going on.

Thanks for using PetCoach. I’m sorry to hear about Lulu! Some mild protrusion during defecation and for a minute after is not uncommon and is usually nothing the worry about. However, I always deworm these guys anyways, as roundworms are a common cause of rectal prolapse. Something like this usually works if that’s the problem. I don't see anything outwardly abnormal from these photos. The blood is usually from straining to defecate but it could also be from rectal polyps, issues with the anal glands, inflammatory bowel disease or intestinal parasites. It is not an emergency but I suggest you have her examined by your vet in the next couple days.

Possibilities include inflammatory disease, cancer, immune mediated disease, an infection, among other possibilities.
