My male cat has a pink and red lump near his anus. Is this normal?

The pictures are not clear but this must be checked by a vet urgently. I would be concerned that this is a prolapse (when internal organs poke out) and surgical repair may be required, urgent assessment is vital as damage and trauma can occur

Hello, and thank you for your question. Reddish bumps on his anus could be a tumour, a polyp or wart, or a partial rectal prolapse. It is impossible to say for sure without seeing it directly, so I would recommend getting Simba seen by the vet within the next few days, or earlier if he seems in discomfort. They may be able to determine the cause just by observation alone, or may recommend a fine needle aspirate to pinpoint the nature of the mass. In the meantime, if he is licking or biting the bum area, I would suggest putting an e-collar (cone) on his head to prevent further trauma. If you are seeing diarrhea, worms, a rash, etc. I would recommend having this looked at by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If it has gone back to normal, then it likely was just a bit harder for him to pass that bit of poop. This could have been a one-off episode for Pumpkin, or it could be a sign that his poops are too hard. You can try just monitoring him and feeling his poop to see if it is hard or squishy. If it is hard, or very wide for his anus, then try adding canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling, just plain canned pumpkin) to his diet. This will increase fibre. Also, with his name it is fitting that this should help him. Otherwise, just keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn't stay out. If it comes out and stays out, this is a true emergency which requires fixing right away. Best of luck with Pumpkin.

Thank you for providing pictures of Butters's lump! If he had an accessed anal sac, the area right around his anus would be swollen and pain, and you would likely see blood in the feces, constipation, and/or painful defecation. From the picture, this looks like a growth, which could be benign or malignant. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. I would have Butters seen by a vet tomorrow to diagnose what is causing the lump so it can be treated as needed.

Please, take Ushi to your local vets for an appointment. Mild, partial rectal prolapse is usually treated with medications to soften up stools, while more severe cases need surgical treatment. Fully clinical examination should suffice to make the definite diagnosis and recommend the best treatment for Ushi.

Hmm... from your photo, I can't tell for sure what this might be. You're right that it looks like a piece of litter, but it could also possibly be a piece of fecal material that is still inside the rectum. If Toby is acting normal, I would recommend waiting 24 hours (or until he poops again) to see if it's still there. It may pass on its own the next time he has a bowel movement. If it's still present by this time tomorrow, or if it begins to bleed or show any other signs of a problem, it would be best to have him checked by a vet - he/she can do a rectal exam to palpate the area and get a better idea of what may be going on.
