Why are my cat's eyes red and gunky after vet treatment failed?

Your cat may have toothroot abscesses that broke through into the sinuses or are affecting her tear ducts. There may also be an inflammatory condition of the gland of the third eyelid. You need to make an appointment with your veterinarian for a hands-on exam.

It looks like Kitty might have an upper respiratory infection causing conjunctivitis. A viral infection is most common, although secondary bacterial infections can also occur. A scratch on the surface of the eye could also cause redness and discharge but would not cause sneezing. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian for an exam. They can check for a scratch on the cornea or prescribe medications to treat a respiratory infection.

Persians and Himalayan’s can sometimes have a rusty brown eye discharge that looks like blood but isn’t. This may be the same with Aegean cats. Some possible causes of the chronic eye discharge could be viral infections such as a chronic feline herpes viral infection for which VetriScience Lysine immune system supplements may help. Changing the litter to a dust free litter often helps as well. If the discharge is thick and Charlie’s eyes are sometime squinty, a visit to your vet for a fluorescein stain to rule out a corneal ulcer and topical ophthalmic antibiotic drops may be indicated. In the meantime wiping the discharge away with hypoallergenic sensitive skin baby wipes or warm water soaked clean tissues is recommended to keep the discharge from building up and causing dermatitis or raw skin around the eyes. Respiratory tract infections with eye involvement are common in kittens and young cats. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian to determine if this is the case or if it is something else. I would recommend having a vet check that first. If negative, he may have herpesvirus. This is common in cats and can flair up in times of change or stress. This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. This is possibly unrelated to the leukemia. I highly recommend that you have Zaki evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Further therapy would be based on the findings. It looks like there might be some blood in the fur around his eye, which could mean that he had trauma to the conjunctiva which might not require specific treatment if the bleeding has stopped. He does also seem to be squinting a little. A corneal abrasion is possible, or bleeding in the eye from direct trauma. A corneal abrasion or bleeding in front of the pupil would require treatment, so I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Cooper's eye. These two problems would not be obvious from a photo alone, but close examination with a light can reveal bleeding and a special staining procedure can help diagnose an abrasion.
