My cat has rust-red eye discharge. Will it get better on its own?

Hello. This could be any number of things such as a flare up of a herpes virus very common in cats, or he has as infection, possibly from a small scratch on his cornea, or even a bit on conjunctivitis. Wil should see his veterinarian to make sure there is nothing more serious with the eye, & usually, with the proper treatments & medications, eyes clear up very nicely. The symptoms of a corneal ulcer or scratch to the eye are squinting or holding that eye closed, discharge (clear to yellow/green), and redness of the conjunctiva and sclera (the tissues around the eye). Upper respiratory viruses can also cause some squinting and discharge. If onyx continues showing symptoms I would have a veterinarian examine his eyes. It may be important to get him started on a topical antibiotic medication. I hope onynx heals quickly. Great name!!

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Many times cats develop herpes virus infections. Most of the time the infection clears on its own. Secondary bacterial infection can occur, in which case an antibiotic is beneficial. If it is just viral, we have to rely on the body to fight the infection. If the eye is improving, the discharge will likely clear up. If it does not resolve 100% or worsens, I would have a vet examine midnight. I hope this helps! Yes, you can try just plain saline. Flush gently for a few seconds. But if you don't see any improvement within 24 hours, I would have Onyx checked out by a vet. There could be a small scratch or ulcer causing the discharge to build up, or even the start of an upper respiratory tract infection. There are medications (lysine) to help keep the virus quiet but there is nothing to cure it completely. Good luck and kisses to Spuka!

Cats often are infected with herpesvirus as kittens, and it can come and go throughout their lives, but often it flares up during times of stress (such as adding a new kitten). They can also get secondary bacterial infections in the eyes and upper respiratory infections. If it's not improving on its own or he starts squinting or pawing at his eye he may need antibiotic drops from your vet.
