My cat's eye is red, gooey, has pus, and won't open. Vet needed?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Egyptian Mau | Male | neutered | 1.6 lbs

Last Monday, Zaki was diagnosed with leukemia. I spent any and all of the money I had saved myself on his food supplements, exams, etc. I noticed yesterday that he has had trouble keeping one of his eyes open. This eye seems red, gooey, and it produces some white pus. My question is whether or not it’s something I can wait out or does he need to see a vet immediately?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. This is possibly unrelated to the leukemia. I highly recommend that you have Zaki evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Further therapy would be based on the findings. Good luck and best wishes!
