My cat has a raised bubble under his skin. Should I be concerned?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 3 years and 11 months old | 12 lbs

Okay I was rubbing my cats left shoulder area and I noticed a raised bubble under the skin. I felt the other side as well and there is nothing like that on that side. Do I need to be concerned

Hello there! A small lump or bubble under the skin that is not painful is probably nothing to be concerned about, but it should still be looked at by a vet at some point - especially if it gets larger, changes color, or if Tater starts scratching or bothering it. At his young age, I'm not terribly concerned about anything serious - a bug bite, foreign object, or a sebaceous cyst could be the culprit. Also, if he's had his vaccinations recently (within the last few weeks), this could also be a local vaccine reaction (which is also usually nothing to worry about and generally resolves in a month or so). The shoulder region is a common injection location. If anything changes or gets worse, a vet visit is in order. Otherwise, it's probably fine to keep an eye on it. Based on the photos attached and your description it is possible that this lesion could be a sebaceous cyst, or cyst within one of the sweat glands in the skin. It is also possible that the lesion could be indicative of a skin infection/abscess or a growing mass; however, I think this is less likely. If Hatter does not seem bothered by this lesion and there is no colored/odorous discharge from it I would recommend continuing to monitor the lesion. This appears to be a small cystic nodule, probably not cancerous, but all lumps & bumps should be evaluated by your veterinarian. A small sample taken with a very small needle can be examined under a microscope to see if there is anything to be worried about. You can watch this for a while, but if it suddenly should enlarge, please have it looked at. Take care.

This could be a pustule which is a local bacterial infection or even a small cyst. If it is just one it may go away on its own. But if there are multiple, this one becomes larger or seems painful your cat may need medication from your veterinarian.

My cat has new skin-colored bumps. When should I be concerned?

If it is the color of his skin typically these are not concerning, and are usually benign masses or sebaceous cysts. However, if it is a firm mass then it’s advised to at least get it tested by your vet or make sure it isn’t something to be concerned about. My 6-month-old cat has a painless bump on his thigh. What is it?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is difficult to see a lump in the photo, but at Capernicus’s age, malignant growths are fairly unlikely. This may be a reaction to a vaccine if administered recently that should disappear with time. I recommend keeping an eye on it and having the spot seen by a vet if there is any discharge, bleeding, increase in size, or it seems to be bothering him. I hope this helps and that all is well!

My cat has a lump near his shoulder after booster shots. Is it normal?

Soft masses that are part of the skin can be either abscesses (pockets of infection), small bits of swelling from vaccine injections (these can last a few months sometimes), fatty masses, and less commonly in a 4 month old kitten, cancers. I would monitor it, if Bean is painful or if it is growing or changing get it looked at right away, otherwise just monitor for now and have it assessed by your vet next time you are in. My cat has a lump on his shoulder and fur loss. Should I see a vet?

It's hard to tell the size but it looks like it may be a benign wart or growth. It appears to be more on the surface of the skin which is good, and it is well defined. Cats do get malignant skin growths so it is a good idea to have your veterinarian examine it and feel underneath also. They can easily remove this if necessary and do a biopsy.
