My cat's purr sounds like a motor. Is a deep rumbling purr normal?

This is perfectly normal. Some cats have a tiny quiet purr, others a very loud purr, and others again actually open their mouth a little to purr loudly. The louder your kitty purrs the happier it is. Hairballs usually cause a cough. Sounds like you have a very happy kitty.

My cat and I have heard other cats sound different in these loving situations. If he is not sneezing, doesn't have nasal discharge and isn't wheezing any other time I wouldn't worry! As long as she isn't in any distress and seems comfortable, that may just be her purring. However, if this is a behavior you've never seen in her before, it's worth getting her checked by your vet just to make sure she doesn't have the start of an upper respiratory infection or something similar.

Cats tend to get polyps at the back of the throat that can cause a change in meowing and purring and result in some nasal discharge or sneezing. I recommend having Mody seen by a vet as soon as possible to rule out these conditions or any secondary infections. I hope all is well!

If Louis is making this sound only when resting, it could be that he is purring because he's happy and relaxed. I'd be more concerned about it if he was making this sound all the time, and in that case, I'd recommend a vet visit. I hope this helps!

Sometimes, it does take time for cats to feel completely comfortable and normal with their surroundings to start purring. Some cats just don't purr like other cats do though. Do you think the "humming" could be purring? Nothing you've said sounds obviously abnormal, and from your description she's active and eating well. It sounds like she receives regular veterinary care, so I'm assuming she's been vaccinated, treated for fleas, etc. Watch her closely, monitor her food and water intake, as well as her appetite. If anything seems amiss, get her checked out, but suspect that she's normal.
