My cat sounds wheezy when purring and relaxed. Should I be concerned?

Pet's info: Cat | American Wirehair | Male | neutered | 2 years and 10 months old

My cat sounds like he is wheezing when he gets all loving and super relaxed. He has been as playful as ever and has just recently stopped drinking as much water. There are times when it worries me, but he seems to be in no discomfort and doesn’t make noise all of the time. Should I be concerned?

It is normal for cats to sound more nasally when they are purring. My cat and I have heard other cats sound different in these loving situations. If he is not sneezing, doesn't have nasal discharge and isn't wheezing any other time I wouldn't worry!

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. As long as Templeton is always breathing comfortably and doesn't seem to have an increased effort to his breathing, this noise is likely nothing to worry about. A cat's respiratory rate should be less than 30 breaths per minute when sleeping. You can count the number of breaths that he takes in 30 seconds, and multiply this times 2. Purring is generally a sign that a cat is content, so as long as he is otherwise acting OK I would not be worried! I hope this is helpful - best of luck with Templeton!

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is possible that Mody's purr has changed due to an obstruction in the nose/back of throat. Cats tend to get polyps at the back of the throat that can cause a change in meowing and purring and result in some nasal discharge or sneezing. I recommend having Mody seen by a vet as soon as possible to rule out these conditions or any secondary infections. I hope all is well!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The best way to measure respiratory rates in animals is when they are asleep. In cats and young animals it is very hard when they are awake as they are sniffing and in cats they purr. I would count his breathing the next time he is in a deep sleep and not purring. I think he is likely fine. He is a young cat and as long as he isn't coughing (sounds like a hair ball) or open mouth panting I think things are fine. if you are still concerned then I would have your Vet examine him. My cat's purr sounds like breathing stops. Is it allergies or URI?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! What a good description! I know the noise exactly! If this is a new sound for her when purring then it could be mild nasal congestion from an upper respiratory tract infection URI) or allergies. Most URI's are viral and run their course in about 2 weeks. I think as long as she is eating/drinking, active and not doing the noise any other time then when purring that it is okay to monitor her for now. I wish you both the best!

My cat wheezes after kitten URI. Is this normal or cause for concern?

Depending on what type of upper respiratory infection Gotham had as a kitten, he may have some damage to his nasal pathways that will cause him to snore or wheeze when he is sleeping. Usually this is not a problem, but if it is getting worse or you notice any other clinical signs, I would certainly contact your veterinarian to make sure it is not something that needs treatment. With the limited history and not being able to hear what this noise sounds like, it is difficult to say what the cause could be. Inflammation or infection can cause changes to the way an animal breathes as well as something stuck in the airway. Penelope is too cute. If this breathing occurs only when she purrs or sleeps, it may be normal for her. If she was sick, I'd expect the breathing to occur like that all the time. Having her checked out by a vet is best, however.

My cat makes whistling or snoring sounds when breathing. Is it normal?

This may be normal for her, especially if she isn't exhibiting any other symptoms. It certainly could be some mild congestion, which is common this time of year as the heat vents tend to blow dust around. But as long as there are no other symptoms, like wheezing, coughing, nasal discharge, or inappetence, you may have nothing to worry about. You might try weight loss to increase her overall quality of life!
