My cat purrs loudly and opens its mouth when inhaling. Is this normal?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 10 months old

My cat breathes in weirdly when he purrs, like his purrs get loudly when he inhales and slightly opens his mouth. It’s been going on for years but not sure if it was genetic, serious or just a hair ball

This is perfectly normal. Some cats have a tiny quiet purr, others a very loud purr, and others again actually open their mouth a little to purr loudly. The louder your kitty purrs the happier it is. Hairballs usually cause a cough. Sounds like you have a very happy kitty.
