My cat was spayed. Is Previcox safe for her post-op pain relief?

Meloxicam (eloxioral) can be given to cats as a single dose but prolonged used is not recommended. It is best to contact your vet if you have questions about the medications but personally, I would not use it in cats unless it was my only option since there are much better cat specific medications to use like Onsior.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There may be reasons, based on health or blood work, why the Vet doesn't send the cats home with pain medications. Cats in general are more sensitive to NSAIDs. They can not metabolize them and can die from improper use. There are drugs like onsior that are approved for cats for 3 days. You can use gabapentin, tramadol and buprenex orally to send home. I tend to NOT send home my cat spays with pain medications, but for an enucleation I would. I think you should calmly and respectfully discuss your concerns for the lack of pain control in cats and see if they will share their reasoning with you. The Vet may not know that some of these cats are indeed very painful, you are their best advocate! I hope this helps and I wish you all the best!

There are no human over-the-counter pain medications that are safe to use in cats, so I would definitely recommend calling your vet to let them know that she is still painful. He/she can prescribe a safe and effective pain medication for you to give at home for the next few days, such as gabapentin, buprenorphine, or tramadol.

I am sorry to hear about Eddie! Unfortunately there are not any safe pain medications available over the counter for cats. I would recommend getting Eddie to a veterinarian for an exam and pain medication (antibiotics may also be needed if bite wounds are present). Cats are very sensitive to drugs and there are only a few prescription pain medications available that are considered safe (these include buprenorphine and Onsior).

Ibuprofen is toxic to cats and should NOT be used at all. Another anti-inflammatory medication as Meloxicam should be ideally used. Antibiotics may be added as well. I would strongly recommend to discuss this treatment with your vet again. Acepromazine and diazepam at appropriate doses should be appropriate for post operative sedation and relaxation. However, neither of these drugs provide any pain control. I would consider adding an opioid-buprenorphine is my preferred opioid in cats- but since it is not available you may want to consider hydromorphine or fentanyl (in hospital) or tramadol (at home). NSAIDs are also an option but these have no sedative effect.
