My cat's praziquantel crumbles. Is a slightly higher dose safe?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

I am trying to dose my cat with praziquantel and the tablets are crumbling when I cut them so i am kinda guesstimating. the tabs are 20mg each and i need to administer 7mg, If I dose at 10Mg would there be any ill effects for it being slightly higher that the recommended dosage. the tabs suggest 1/4 tab per 5.5lbs. I just need a "safe" limit to prevent overdose.

Praziquantel has a very high margin of safety, so it would be perfectly fine to go a bit high on young, healthy cat. Reactions can happen with any drug even at normal doses, so if he seems off afterwards, definitely take him in for evaluation, but I would be very comfortable with you giving half a tablet.
